Description Featuring Rabbit
Summer, Y760NA
Silverthorne, The Ash Plains

Exasperated by a spring that had produced little rainfall, the summer had proven to be long, hot, and dry. The grass beneath Rabbit’s hooves crunched and snapped beneath her weight as she moved steadily through the plains. Accustomed to travelling silently, her noisy progress felt like she was advertising her solitary presence to every predator in the area. She could only hope that none would be so brave or foolish to try and make a meal of her. Still, it didn’t hurt to be extra vigilant. She kept her ears at attention and was constantly scanning the tall grass for signs of movement.

Confident that she was alone, Rabbit let her gaze drift upward toward the sky. Monstrous thunderheads were building to the east, dark and foreboding. Rabbit welcomed them, however. Adhar knew they needed the rain. The storm travelled fast, and within the hour, the sky overhead roiled with black clouds. Thunder boomed and rumbled, and lightning lit the interiors of the clouds ominously. The wind picked up all around Rabbit, sending the ocean of grass into frenzied motion.

Not wanting to be caught out in the storm, Rabbit hustled into a gallop. She wasn’t too far off from the Winterflame at the border of the Ash Plains. Another thirty minutes, if she were quick and threw caution to the wind. She ran hastily, carried along by the current of the wind. She rejoiced in the freedom momentarily, the feeling of being young and swift and alive---

Lightning crashed into the earth just ahead, blinding Rabbit and sending her tumbling to the grass. She regained her feet quickly, shivering with fear and nerves by the close encounter with the Sky God, and gasped when she saw the first tendrils of smoke rising from the area where the lightning has struck. The dry grass caught quickly, and soon a wall of roaring fire rose before her. The wind increased in intensity and served only to make the flames more fearsome.

Rabbit gave a strangled cry and ran, her heart racing. The fire moved as quick as a snake, and seemed to surround her almost instantly. Wherever she turned and darted, she was met by the flames. She wasn’t worried about being burned - no Silverthorne did - but the air filled with smoke, and it seared her throat and lungs. If she didn’t find a way out soon, she’d surely suffocate.

Ringed by the fires, Rabbit skittered backwards until her rump hit a smoldering tree. With nowhere else to go but forward, she reached into the flame with her magic and willed it to part. It strained against her senses, but opened a channel just wide enough for her to pass through. She could feel the heat of the flames on either side of her, licking at her neck, her sides, her hips. Her lungs protested and begged for clean air and, just as she thought she might collapse, she was through!

She ran as far as she could before falling to her knees and coughing, her lungs starved for breathable air. As she knelt on the ground, she heard shouts in the distance and the sound of thundering hooves growing closer. The firebringers! They must have seen the light of the wildfire from the Winterflame. A dozen of them surrounded the roaring wildfire and worked together to contain it. As if on cue, the skies finally opened up and began raining.

Transfixed and dazed from her near-suffocation, Rabbit watched the firebringers work their magic. Paired with the rainfall, they had the blaze under control in little less than half an hour, and had managed to snuff it out soon after. A tract of land as wide as a lake had been blackened by the wildfire, and Rabbit shivered. It could have been much worse had it not been for the timely arrival of the firebringers and the rain.

A pair of firebringers trotted closer to her, both stags and both sweating from the exertion of containing the blaze. “Are you alright?” one of them asked.

Rabbit nodded and tried to speak, but her voice came out in a hoarse croak.

The other stag smiled, “We saw you run out of the heart of the wildfire. It was a near thing, it looked like. Let’s get you home. I’m sure a herbalist will have something for your throat.”

Rabbit nodded again and stood on shaky legs.

Thank Adhar for firebringers.
