I'm curious where the trend in anime (which is a terrible way to generalize this style of aesthetic) of girls with giant robot gear on their head came from. It looks great, just interested if there's any history to it, or if it's purely because it looks cool. Either way it's fun stuff!

Well in my theory, every genre or school of art has tropes that follow it. Kind of like how many of the woodblock print artists in japan all have done their interpretation of Mt. Fuji, or how many Renaissance sculptors have done a Madonna.
These tropes create expectations in the viewers minds and that allows the artist to create their own interpretation with their own vocabulary. The effect is that this process gives viewers a window into how artists think differently, which is a fun little game between viewers and artists.
"girls with giant robot gear on their head" in my opinion is the same idea in modern times. Lots and lots of "anime inspired" artists like to tackle this trope because they want to show people how they can do things differently, and how they think differently.
This trope in particular in my mind is fun because artists can get really abstract with the robot gear shapes, but the face brings it back down to earth. A fun exercise indeed!

Very good summary. It's something that i've wanted to do for a while. I like the relationship between size and shape, (small girl blooming into a large metallic structure) and a fun play between something industrial and powerful being supported by something fragile and elegant in a way. In short ITS TOTALLY SIIIICK BRO
