Amazing painting and concept! So many theories come to mind as to the story behind that sphere. Is it an object or perhaps a being? What are its properties? Who/what made it float in that exact spot?

It's a Joke 
In that Story, gigantic Beings named as " Angels " threaten Mankind to go extinct, by searching for something they are never allowed to find,
and they can have the most impossible Bodies and Forms 
The "A.T.-Field" is a powerful Ability they can manifest, blocking even Bombs with the Power of atomic Weapons. In Evangelion, the Humans
fighting them have succeeded in creating "artificial Angels" - or Hybrids - half Angel half Machine - something like gigantic Cyborgs, who can
also manifest A.T.-Fields to fight them - and who have to be piloted by Human Pilots! Kinda like Pacific Rim
The Sphere in your Picture could be an Evangelion-Angel in "Stand by" Mode - waiting for an Impulse to act.
