Thank you so much for the kind comment on these. There's a small back story here ...

I took these for a local course run by the local college on creative photography. I take these kinds of course which usually take up an evening or so for 5 to 8 weeks, largely because they force me to do something out of my comfort zone or if nothing else have "homework" which means deadlines and thus I am forced / motivated to create something.

This particular exercise was "worm's eye view" .. i.e. shoot from low down and either along the ground or up .. as if seeing as a worm would.

When I submitted one of the shots (one with stones in the foreground: [link] ) to the class for critique the instructor was less than enthused and I was little crestfallen (he'd been very complimentary of earlier submissions).

Turns out that he thought I had not done a worm's eye view at all and that the stones were "huge rocks and boulders". The stones are in fact tiny pebbles mostly less tan 1/2 an inch across.

The other part of this was getting up early enough to catch the light like this - I was really lucky - I knew I wanted to photograph at this spot but I had no idea that the light would be so cooperative.

obviously, being forced out of your comfort zone worked quite well. the times i have tried that, it has never worked but i was never really given an assignment. i used to be able to get up early for the great light and also, that last hour in the evening and just after sunset...now, i am much less enthusiastic..i admire your tenacity and gumption

Hmm - I should perhaps clarify that "early" was 8am ish - the EXIF info shown on DeviantArt says 9:24am but in real world time it was 8:24am.

I do not do dawn that well.
