Description Hello everyone! Firstly, sorry for the small size. Pixlr (the site where I added the text) resized it automatically. I hope it's still able to be read.
In any case, if the brush settings/sliders aren't visible enough, here is the blank file in full size for you to grab them off of.Β

Hope this is helpful! I don't know if I'm really qualified to be making tutorials, but this method seems to be one (perhaps there's a reason) that I've never seen anyone else use, so I figured I'd add a bit to dA's sadly short list of SAI tutorials.

Here is the finished piece of the image used in the tutorial:

Keep in mind that with a dark character, some of the guidelines may be trickier. It will still work, but detail might be lost.

No worries, I'll leave it up! It is old, but I'm glad people can get a use out of it.

Do you have any 'line' tutorials? I am having SUCH an issue with my lines.

By far THE best cell-shading tutorial I've seen and even better since it's for SAI. Β Thank you so much!

*dances* This is super nice, thank you Noe! I'm a SAI noob and the tip on clipping groups was seriously helpful. I've been selecting my base color and working inside that selection from start to finish when coloring and shading. It can be a pain de-selecting and re-selecting the base when working on other parts. Now I won't need to anymore! :3

Oh my gosh, I can't believe I never knew about those wand tool settings! Everything makes so much sense now! I've apparently been doing selections the hard way. OTL

This is super-intriguing. I find it personally helpful to do a mixture of erasing and drawing to achieve shading, but I'll have to give this a try sometime. Awesome tutorial!

Erasing using brushes is awesome, by the way. By far my favorite method of erasing. Once I learned that I never looked back.

(You should do a color-choosing tutorial sometime. xD)

Use your pencil on the "transparent" setting? May I ask for further clarification on that if you have time? I wasn't aware that you could use other brushes as 'erasers' in Sai, can you?!!!

Also thanks for putting together a tutorial, I know it was probably a bit of a pain but it is greatly appreciated Β

Just select the smallest box to make it transparent! then you don't have to keep going from your brush to the eraser

Thank you! Haha, I had no idea you could do that

noebelle In reply to MerrySacrament [2016-01-30 03:20:24 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you can! Sometimes they work better than the actual eraser, too (if you want a softer effect. For some reason I can't get my eraser brush to go any softer.)

What you're going to want to do is select the brush and then click this little square below your primary and secondary color selections. (Just below the color wheel)Β gyazo.com/124a282a88dbe5379e5e…

That is amazing. Thank you so much, I've had that exact problem with being unable to make my eraser brush any softer, I'd been doing workarounds like erasing then using the water brush to soften the edges but it's not the same effect, haha.Β

You're the best, thanks so much <3

You can do all of this in PS. It's all very similar, except just some of the shortcuts and location of where the item is.
