Description Here is the finished product. As you can see on the bottom right corner, my teacher decided he'd "bless" it with the grade on the front wrather than on the back. Nice huh?

Here was his comments:

"Honestly, I think this was done nicely. But it wasn't enough. I don't see the concept. It doesn't look to qualify under what the contest stated. And adding letters didn't brighten it any. I don't understand what the point is of the flowers. This *pointing to the icons* just makes me think you threw them in to make Drum happy. This doesn't look good for having been worked on for 3 weeks. That's why I gave you that grade." ~ Mr.Drum

This was EXACTLY what the contest sheet he gave us said:

In Honor and Observance of NATIONAL LAW WEEK
THE YOUNG LAWYERS SECTION
OF THE STATE BAR OF NEVADA
is pleased to announce the 2006
The Judge Roger Foley Essay and Poster Contest
They purpose of this contest is to impart an understanding of the rule of law and how the three governmental branches work together for a the common good.
Topic: Liberty Under Law: Separate Branches, Balanced Powers
It is important that all Americans understand what the Founders intended and accomplished in creating a government of separate powers. The Founders were very concerned that the government they established not have all its powers cocentrated in the hands of a few officials. They agreed with Montesquieu that if "the right of making and of enforcing the laws is vested in one and the same man, or the same body of men... there can be no liberty." The Founders were also concerned that the powers granted to one branch would be balanced by powers granted to others. Congress's power to legislate, for example, is balanced by the executive's power to veto legislation and by the judiciary's power to declare legislation unconstitutional. This system of checks and balances ensures that each branch serves as a constraint on, and is constrained by, the powers of the other branches.
This theme is intended to show how the branches have their separate spheres and separate powers, but work together for the common good. The theme also is central to building understanding of the rule of law, which has always been a primary purpose of Law Day.

Hmm I guess the only thing I didn't pay attention to was that very last line. I suppose maybe I'm that much of a tad grateful that Mr.Drum didn't send it. I'm quite happy with this art no matter how he put it down. It may have been a tad on the abstract side, but it's originality, and that's what they wanted. It does to express each other constraining one another, yet forming perfect unity for the greater good. I dunno, maybe I'm crazy and am the only one that sees it. I still liked this piece... and I think it was worth more than a C- ...

feh. well, i dunno where mr drum is coming from, honestly, but i dont think anyone does. however, i do feel this would be a much nicer piece if you worked more with the scales, and less with the lincon head and white house. those two look to stenciled and well, out of place. i think ya could have maybe found better symbols. however, one of the most important symbols of this pic, whihc i love the most, are the flowers and vines intertwining each. more then just connecting it to the other, i think this also ties each symbol back to the earth and nature, which, hating government, i love. lol in my opinion text almost always looks bad in a pic, with only few exceptions, however yer very tight and cursivy writing usuall goes well with yer pics of choice. ^-^ ok, now im talkin out meh ass. *hugs* i loves ya. dun let mr. drum drag ya down, he does that too much already. <3

lol the scales are one of the icons. I used 3 different examples of clipart my dad sketched to do the icons seen above.
I dunno why Drum missed the symbolism of the flowers and vines... perhaps he just doesn't have the imagination to? *shrug* I suppose I'm over it now. And I not only thank you, but everyone else for their words of their personal wisdom upon the situation.
A main idea in them all was to forget the grade he gave me, that was his opinion. It's what he has to use to grade the art. What I feel about the image, is my feelings. The work itself I did very well. I will have this in my portfolio, and I will show this to the schools I wish to attend. And I will hold my pride of my work, and show that it definately wasn't my confidence that got me that grade, but that of an unimaginative art teacher craving to be a librarian.
Thankies for your support and comment. *hugs*

He's blind and he's less mature than we are. And ye gods, can I be immature. Unfortunately so for a prolly 40-something, possibly lonely, and possibly alchoholic(As my mom sees itXD!) old man, I suppose it's okay. Just pet the special Dum- er, Drum and leave it be. Ignore his words for he is not "ART GOD" and his word is not ever "RELIABLE" -_-; (That and he doust not havith the specialgodly paint brush ~.^) He's a close-minded person, leave it at that. And btw, I still love this picture, the only distraction I see to it is the seemingly random and rather distracting (and ugly) "C-" That I see no reason to be there. Perhaps if it were an A+ then I'd prolly see it differently.

What the...? Why such a low grade? Can't he see the connection between floral and the take on the government branches? x_o I think It's beautiful, and it represents the theme quite well. The use of red, white, and blue...the way the branches overlap, and the fact that you used abstract to convey it as well. It's such a unique take on the subject.

I know my teachers wouldn't be so rude...they'd understand the concept right away. None of my teachers have EVER said anything to me in that tone, and they weren't/aren't cranky critics, either. They pointed out what was wrong to me, and were kind enough to grade me on a separate sheet of tissue paper, laying over my original piece. Rargh. Even my high school art teachers were nice, always encouraging me, even though my art was crap back then, compared to now.

He must have had a bad day, or something...either that, or an attitude problem. Is he always like that? A good slap would cure him of--oh wait, teacher, right.

One of my watchers said there's an art college where they're really stuck-up and very rude when it comes to critique. She brought her portfolio there and basicially everything she brought was pretty much crap to them, including her photos. >_< Agh, that pisses me off. She's a decent artist, too. It's like, we're going to art college to learn this stuff, and you act like we have to know it all beforehand! Wtf. I don't get it. I think it was Pratt. x_x Stay away from there.

Yes, he is like that all the time. The only reason me and haven't given up, is because we've supported each other through tears even from him. And to think that next year he's going to be the librarian.
As for colleges, I'm going to Nevada State. That way I can not only work on my art, but my other thrill, computer programming. *is a jack of many trades, pokes "Varied Artist"* I have ventured to many different things... so yeah... I get a thrill from trying new things... until I got into this guys art classes... It hasn't just been this one picture either... And he's shooting down my photography that my dad chose as his favorite. (My dad is a Photographer. He used to be a well known pro around Vegas, but then had to go to a new job cause he couldn't afford upgrades to his camera. Then low and behold, I saved so much and yes he had to help me, but we bought him his over $1k digital camera with attachable lenses (SP?)) My dad is upset... Bigtime. I can't wait to graduate.

My art teacher would have not only gave you an At, she would have found ti TOO GOOD to send it. Hell she may even send them a copy explaining just that. Art by definition is "touched with a human hand and emotion" It doesn't state that it must be a certain type no matter what. If people can throw paint on a canvas and get millions because "IT'S ART WORK" so can this. It states that it wanted originality. You did that, no one I have ever known has taken the idea "3 branches" literally with using flora. You showed all three branches by what they do with their own flower then had them combined, to show they work together as well. You teacher is either very DUMB *should change his last name, it's soooo oh very similar to that word* Or is very jealous. You deserve even if it was not all he wanted at least a B+. And anyways, he had no right to not send it in. HE IS NOT the judge. So he had no right. All he could grade was it as an assignment. Everything else was out of his hands. But yes I guess on the weird flip side, we can be thankful he didn't send it in. Don't worry. More contest will come and if your teacher is dumb enough to not send it in again. Then you know he is jealous.

*clings* Hai... Just it still really put me down. And it makes me feel sick... And unsure. I'm told that there are harsher critics than him out there. And that if I can't handle him, then I'm not ready for being an artist. That I should give up my art... And go for something else... And I don't doubt that there are people worse than him... I just feel like I'm in such a bind.... though art, writing, and computers are what I thrive on... and most of the people I know NOW are because my artwork was noticed while I was working on it...
