This was not what the Roman governor had expected. He glared daggers down at the woman in the arena as the local mob laughed and jeered at his ineptitude of his men. It was supposed to be a simple execution. A bit of blood and pageantry. The execution of a woman who had the brazen audacity to spurn his generous advances.
Oh how his cruel withered heart rejoiced to she her humiliated. To see her, laid bare, stripped of her pious self righteous dignity, thrown onto the killing floor of his Amphitheatre.
When the trap doors opened and the tigers came out into the sun...
He was at the height of his pride. at the pinnacle the precipice of his latest triumph...
She sat on her knees, her face down and her eyes avoiding the cheering throng as her long luxurious ruby red hair fluttered in the breeze.
The closer they edged toward her the greater was his thrill!
And then it ended...
...but not quite the way he or the gathered crowd had expected.
Like giant kitty cats they nuzzled the great faces against hers. Like docile pets they purred and pawed at her feet.
But the humiliation did not end there. No. It only got worse from there on.
The governor, not willing to admit defeat, ordered his archers, who were always on the duty around the arena, to fire a volley down at the woman and the traitorous beasts.
From on high they came, those mighty bolts of death, swift as eagles they flew, down, down, down...
...only to bounce harmlessly off of the tigers stripped hides.
Volley after volley rained down upon them, all to no effect.
Armed gladiators were sent into the arena with swords, maces, and tridents...
...and all were laid low by the claws of the defending tigers. Every effort the governor ordered was quickly repelled by the lady and her feline guardsmen. All around the pale bare skinned beauty lay the carnage of the governor's numerous failures. The red of the blood on the sand was a banner of his defeat.
What other choice did he have? How could he continue to try to kill that woman without loosing control of the mob?
It was with great pain, and a fury that boiled beneath his crawling skin that he ordered the release of that wretched woman.
The tigers went with her, and the men who accompanied her from the den of death were in no mood to try and stop them.
"Soon..." the governor grumbled under his breath as he watched his would be victim leave. "Soon there will be a reckoning! Soon we will meet again!"
Little did he know as she walked out of the arena just how true those words would be and even if he did he never would have expected just who would come out on the losing end of that meeting...
