Description I whole heartedly and passionately believe that literature is an art, and that it can be as powerful and meaningful as any painting, symphony or film.

Sure, there's no colours, no soundtrack or anything else that (for me) makes visual art and film awesome, and sure, that huge paragraph of words does look daunting. But what makes literature so special, for me, is that it creates, entertains and moves in a way that is profoundly different.

Even though you lack colour or music, you have a whole treasure trove of words whose ancestors were spoken in a different time and a different place. And the choice of each word - its sound, its flavour, its history, the way it rolls on your tongue - brings your world, your characters, and your inner-most thoughts and desires to life just as skillfully and as movingly as any medium a visual artist may use. The choice of a word can be the difference between subtle and bold, light and dark, poetic or prosaic. A single well-chosen word can say more than a dozen ill-chosen words. A single, well-written page can say more than an entire badly-written novel.
And even though the blocks of words may seem uninviting, if you manage to break through them as though they were some enchantment, then your reward is an invitation into a vivid world that reflects the thoughts or desires of another, whether it is a modern author who lives like you, or an nameless author hidden away in the unseen depths of history.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then surely a mere short story can be worth fine art.

^_^ I love this! In a sense, words create a work of art inside the mind... yet, writing really isn't widely considered to be an art form. Nice job.

I've always sort of wondered how that saying handles, say, a 100,000 word novel. Presumably, it's worth 100 pictures- but since it's just one work, is it 100 times better? I guess what people should really take away from that sort of saying is that it's hard to determine the value of a work of art.

It's nice to see a stamp that not only gives a little love to literature, but also really makes you think.

I don't think we can measure literature and art in the same way we can measure temperature or anything numerical, but I dislike it when people disregard one medium simply because it does not express things in the same way as another. I think we need to alter our expectations when approaching works of different mediums, or even of different genres.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a book can paint ten billion pictures.

I can't seem to agree with the "A picture is worth a thousand words" saying.

I find many stories to be a lot more descriptive than any picture could ever wish to be.

I think there are great paintings out there that can express the deepest meaning without the need for words, but it just annoys me when people think that writing cannot have as much impact just because it isn't audial or visual.

Stories are like movies, but just in your head. And in that way, it certainly provides a unique experience, as you can imagine everything yourself.

Agreed! Literature is art, too. To me, art is expressing something through some media so that others can experience a bit of the inspiration or emotion or whatever you were trying to put into it. I think music is art, too.

Oh yes, music is definitely art. When you think about it, DeviantArt is not so much an art website as it is a visual art website. Not that's a bad thing, but I would love to see more amateur writers and musicians get a helping hand.

I agree with this wholeheartedly! Language can go places that visual art maight not be able to, because well chosen words can bring out the masterpieces of your imagination with little physical effort!
I think this should be suggested for a DD!
