Description I saw the new "CHARLIE & the Chocolate Factory" movie this past weekend...what a shame it was.   Maybe it's cause of my warped little mind, that I found the original 1971 version with Gene Wilder an instant classic.  Unlike, this monstrosity of the new Johnny Depp/ Tim Burton version.

I remember coming home from grammar school and dictating my mother to put the VHS in the VCR so that I can entertain my mind with...I dunno...chocolate?  I wasn't allowed to eat sweets when I was younger...this movie was the only form of instant gratification of being deprived of all things that are good.  I loved that movie...even if there was really cheesy songs in the movie "If you want to view paradise, simply look around and you will", for example.  The movie in all gave me hope that I too can have something in life to look forward to.

It only took me like 10 years ago, to realize how bizarre and freakish this movie is.  No, Willy Wonka wasn't the friendly cheerful chocolate maker...he's was this sarcastic son of bitch, who if he was real in life...I would want him to be my friend.

Who else would comment "The suspence is killing me...I hope it will last", when a overweight German boy named Augustus Gloop, gets sucked into a tube that deposits chocolate to other parts of the factory?  Any person would probably would be evicted in court, for harrassment.  But not good ole Willy.  Every just moves on like nothing happened.

Then every one of them ends up being the greedy selfish children they are raised to be, only one by one being eliminated from the tour they won.  Except for one...Charlie Bucket.  A poor child who lives in a poverty stricken house, in a town that isn't at all in fear of living the life that Charlie lives.  He has 4 grandparents who all lay in the same bed for the last 20 years, who eat cabbage soup for thier breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

At the end of, well both movies actually...Charlie wins the grand price of owning the Chocolate Factory.  Because only a child will run the factory like Willy Wonka would want it to.  I dunno if it's the best idea for a young child to be working due to the child slavery laws that are in effect...but apparently that's not the whole point of the movie.

All in all...the main point of me writing this is that NOTHING beats the original of anything.  Here's an idea...instead of making a remake of the same movie...make a sequel.  Wouldn't it be interesting to see Charlie in charge of the factory when he's older.  Simple idea,  and took a genius to think of it.

Goodbye to all. Adieu. Aufwiedersehen. Gesundheit. Farewell.

To be honest I love the tim burton version more..Ive seen the orginal and I liked it and all but I think johnny depp really did a good job in the film (he is like my most favorite male actor)
I also liked the story in the remake and I was glad that it showed willy wonka's family ( or just dad) .

Im not saying I hate the orginal but you know everyone has opinions..

oh I agree. the original is much better. I don't care if the new movie was closer to the book--it's much darker and focuses much more on a back story that never happened in the book at all! However....
now that I think about it, and after watching both movies again recently, it's come to my attention that the OLD movie is actually much creepier. in the remake, wonka acts the way he does because he's a frightened little insecure child with a huge father complex. in the old movie, howver, he's just insane. Pure insane. with no real reason for his actions. notice how we never see what happens to the children at the end of the wilder version? (granted, at the time there really was no way to portray an 8 foot tall mike teevea, or a lfexible, blue violet) however, for all we know, even if he says theyl'' be restored to their normal selves, theres no real telling WHAT wonka did whith them. for all we know, he really COULD have killed them or something. the fact that wilder IS an actual crazy wonka, with no real reason, makes the movie that much more unpredictable (proof: during the boat scene--he comepletely goes crazy and scares the crap out of EVERYONE)
also, wonka in the new mvoie isn't too bright, it seems....watching it again, i found he annoyed me rather than made me laugh. wilder wonka is witty, giving him a one-up over the children adn their parents.
but one thing i loved the most about wilder wonka is that sparkle in his eye, and change his moods rapidly. and his sarcasm.

Well, there is a sequel to Charlie and the chocolatefactory. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. It's not about Charlie as an grown up, but that would be pretty disturbing to see.

I don't know... I loved Tim Burton's verison. I mean, it's true, you can't beat a classic movie, but Tim's movies have always been good to me. Probably because he gives a more spooky feeling to them, but it's true it wasn't the best idea to do that to a cute little children's movie.

Still, Burton made it have more a magical, realistic feeling to it than Highmore's did, and he went into depth about something, like how Wonka got the Oompa Loompas, and why Wonka decided to start making candy.

Classics 'can't' be beaten, but they can be matched up to. The newer verison has cons to it I guess, like how the Oompa Loompas looked. I thought they looked much cuter in the original. But the original ones didn't even sound like they were singing, while the newer ones did. And the newer one pointed out things too, like how the Loompas knew what to sing about and how they could be so rehearsed.

Anyway, in my opinion, both were great, and got down the book pretty well. But... I still say the book is better than the movies ;D And the book has the sequel to when they go blasting off in the glass elevator. That was another thing I was disappointed about, that the glass elevator didn't go blasting off into space in either movie, like it did in the books. Oh well, I still love all of them.

I uh...would have faved this if you hadn't needed to completely insult the new version. Myself, I have room for all interpritations, but truth be told Burton's film is far closer to the book than the original. I always loved the first film, still do, but this new film inspired me to FINALLY read the book and I could see why Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory never met with his approval. Wilder is undeniably intriguing in the film - frightening, but an intellectual man. Depp contains more of a child-like quality and inner pain that's evolved into what we describe as "creepy" (not an uncommon occurance in ths world of ours you know).

I don't think the new film detracts from the original, simply makes it more modern while Burton attempted to stay truer to the book.

Charlie will be more a 'pupil' of Wonka I do believe and what I found REALLY intriguing in this new adaptation is the twist that WONKA needs Charlie; that they are BOTH learning from each other. Heck, Highmore's Charlie is probably more mature than Depp's Wonka. Anyway, I hope you'll give the new film another chance and please do read the book if you never have. In fact, many of Dahl's works are wonderfully entertaining.

I agree. The original movies are generally better. Instead of making remakes of older movies, why don't they make NEW ones? New movies based on new ideas? Hollywood used to do it before. Why all these remakes like "King Kong", "Dukes of Hazzard", "War of the Worlds", etc??? There are many good novels out there with great stories they could film. Yes, I know sometimes turning a book into a movie doesn't always go smoothly and the movie may not live up to the book for some reason, but surely that's better than remakes that already everyone has seen?
