Description The trees were always beautiful at this time of May, the flowers full in bloom. Sierra couldn't help but stare out at them from the window of the tower she stood in. This was the highest point in her parent's castle, and she could see the entire town from here, everyone bustling about and preparing for the ceremony. Her hair blew in the gentle wind that made the treetops sway and seem to wave at her. She smiled as she watched the small children below rushing around the gardens, trying to pick the best flowers, make the prettiest bouquet. Daisies, daffodils, lilies and petunias, all in their most beautiful state of life.
She frowned as she turned away from the open window, pulling it shut behind her. The happiness she had felt before was fading, replaced by a deep sadness she chose to not let show around others. Seeing the weather so peaceful, the people so happy, had reminded her of her brother, her dear brother Aidin, who had died three years ago, almost to the day. He had always loved the springtime as much as she had. She remembered the day the news of his death had arrived as if it had happened just the day before.
Aidin was a hero, someone who everyone looked up to. He was a ladies' man, a tall, gorgeous, blue-eyed brunette with a boisterous laugh and a heartbreaking smile. He was the rebel royal, the prince who loved the title but not the duties that came with it. He was never one for politics or war; a gentle heart, through and through.
That is, up until the day his closest friend, Hachi, the prince of a neighboring kingdom, sent Aidin a message requesting assistance in a battle that his father was desperately losing.
Aidin and Sierra's father would hear nothing of it. He repeatedly stated that the battle had nothing to do with them, and that he would not waste warriors on a battle that was already lost. Angry, Aidin had ridden off by himself to help his friend, and he had never returned. It was months later before word came by messenger that the war had been lost, that there had been no survivors. Any prisoners taken had been executed, the prince among them. He carried Aidin's crown with him, and a message that Sierra and her family would never forget.
A ceremony was held where Aidin's crown was buried. The messenger didn't know what became of the bodies of soldiers lost in the battle. Sierra wanted to cry at the thought of her brother never finding peace because his body wasn't properly prepared for the afterlife. She had been only seventeen at the time, still young, but old enough to understand that watching her brother ride off angrily to battle was the last she would ever see of him.
After the ceremony was over, the council decided there needed to be a day set aside each year in remembrance of the prince, and his sacrifice. Sierra was disappointed in them. As if anyone needed a reason, an order, to remember her brother. She would remember him always. In spite of that, she still was forced to attend this ceremony of remembrance for Aidin, but she felt better when she was grieving in the solitude of her room, among his possessions she had snuck from his chambers, and not among a crowd of people who were there because they were told they had to be.
That ceremony was the next day. The middle of May, Aidin's favorite time of year, and hers as well. It was one of the things she remembered best about her brother after these years. Sierra peeked over her shoulder at the children gathering the flowers once more before drawing the curtains to block out the light and climbing back into her bed. The flowers were being gathered to decorate the palace and the prince's grave, just like on the day his crown was buried.
They suddenly didn't seem so beautiful anymore.
