This reminds me of the first times I experimented with acrylic paint. I didn't use a hairband and had to cut a lot of the tips...

That hair looks awesome! I love that soft, fluid flow it has as it flutters about. Even more than that, I think, I like the highlights -- they breathe sooo much light into the hair! Obviously, the colorful lighting at the back of the hair turns into those fluid splashes of color. But the warmer tones, those smaller bursts of highlights towards the front of the head add a lot of life and energy to everything and look really great.
I like the face a lot. The eyes have that look where it's halfway focused and halfway out of it, like hes thinking about something far away. The lips are open, a bit slack and relaxed, which makes that kind of far-off look a little stronger, too.
I really like how those bolder splashes of color interacted with the muted tones of everything else. It makes for a really striking, interesting painting.
Great job!

wow may I ask that you do a coloring tutorial based off of the way u colored this??

Nyanfood In reply to OnigiriPandahats [2014-08-09 03:21:51 +0000 UTC]
I'm not really sure what I would be teaching in the tutorial... cause it's literally just throwing colors together. There's no method or any real process that's different from other basic painting tutorials.

I really love what you've been doing recently, Nyan!Β It's really fun to see how you experiment with different color techniques.Β This abstract color use blended with your more realistic style is really something... I feel like I could look at this for hours and still not be able to figure out what it is that I love so much about it.Β It is such an engaging visual piece ~

But no matter what I do, I can't handle colors and layering like you do. ; v; Your art is always so spontaneous and painterly. I feel like I'm too scared to leave my structure and explode with it. But in the end, I feel like I'm in a "Kat-Art" phase and I want to play with brighter, more contrastive colors too.

Oh man please don't say that...I think you're using colors really well! And man the way you treat details is so great!!! I especially love your Unawakened Queen to pieces...pieces!!!
Oh I totally getchu, bright colors are really hard to deal with and it always drives me crazy! I always end up going for more muted stuff and have to repaint and all augh. But I guess it all comes with color palette practice and a lot of...tumblr browsing for palette inspo >_>Β

Haha I like to look at photos and if I see a good palette, take note/save of it. Most of the time even if I start off with a set palette from a photo it'd still change and become its own thing, which is pretty cool. It's really helpful with developing a good sense of color too since sometimes idek how to match colors kjdsflkjd. try it it's fun! And legal! I think...!Β
Ohaha thanks, I have to adjust the colors mid-way a lot...so sometimes you'd see my process shot change color scheme half way through aha;;; So yeah don't be afraid to adjust stuff, I'm pretty sure not many people paint with actually eye-bleedingly bright colors...
Omg no way! That's not at all how your art looks! I mean I totally get you about the "my art sucks so i'll just drown it in details" since I do see it happen, but I honestly don't think your art sucks to begin with! Like your queen art (I really adore it) has wonderful lighting, anatomy, colors, and design! Haha I think what is working out for you is way more than detailing!
Oh ahhhh I hope I can stream one day! Maybe when I get a new computer, since my desktop really can't run anything else when I'm drawing, and I don't like to draw on my laptop. Oh my thank you so much!! I hope we can both improve ahh!

Photos are a great idea~! I'll def give it a try. o uo My sense of color is super weak because I rarely look at photographs, probably.
I meant like, my art was sucky in the past, as in about 7-8 years in the past. XD;;;; Detailing was the crutch I used back then, but in the process of detailing, I did develop a good habit of noticing structural details like anatomy and design. Color and lighting are things I recently started to work on more. o vo// Mainly because I observe the works of artists like you~
Ah! Before I forget, are you ordering one of the Letters Artbooks we worked on? o Ao
