After taking up shelter in Lordaeron, Varian quickly became friends with Arthas Menethil who was anxious to meet another young prince.Though most of the time he kept his composure, Varian once broke into tears as Arthas tried to console him about the assassination of his father. He was later recalled by Arthas as his "best friend" for much of their childhood and adult lives, and Varian frequently sparred with the less-athletic Arthas in an attempt to toughen him and make him a better paladin.They build up a friendly rivalry, and a year after Varian was crowned king, they met and sparred on the day of Arthas' ascension to the Order of the Silver Hand. Though not outwardly spiteful, Arthas frequently lamented that he was not as physically strong as Varian. During the later murder of King Terenas, Arthas recalled words that Varian once said about how King Llane was "stabbed right through the heart" moments before he plunged Frostmourne through his own father's heart.
After Arthas' falling in with the Scourge and rise to become the new Lich King, Varian began to see him as the ultimate traitor to the Alliance.

I heart Varian, so much, even though I'll always be Jaina's biggest fan. I was reading this article and just fell in love with the idea of Varian and Arthas being such amazingly good friend's as children- almost like brothers. They're just...there's something so cute about it.
So, here we have young Varian about to try and cross a rather high wall in Lordearon, while young Arthas watches and thinks this may not be the very best of ideas.

It'd be interesting if Blizzard released something showing Varian feeling towards Arthas after the fall of the Lich King. I imagine he may have forgiven Arthas to some extent like Jaina and Muradin have as evidence by the nameless grave with the symbol of Lorderon in Stormwind which I suspect is where Arthas is buried

I was considering making a comment on my "I just wanna see them TRY it" thing before, and was like "nah it's off topic and you may not have seen-" I just noticed your username. xD So you ARE an Avatar fan then I take it<3 This is worth mentioning before I get started... x'3 You're talking to someone who STILL ships Zutara, and believes that until the creators DIRECTLY state that it never EVER happened that it still doesn't contradict canon at all. xD Even after the terrible implied-but-everyone-pretends-it-was-definite Kataang ending, and even after hearing that Tenzin in the sequel was confirmed as Kataang's son. x'3 Because, after all, just because they were together at 12 and 14 and together again later does NOT mean they never broke up between that time, and in fact the odds are nigh impossible that they didn't. ;D

So! x3 Clearly, everyone feels terrible for Jaina. She waited for Arthas for eight solid years, ever since the Culling, or a few days after technically I suppose. Even after he became the first new Death Knight and later the Lich King, bane of all life on their planet, for seven of those years, she never, ever gave up on him. After he slaughtered thousands, his forces millions, she still thought about him, longed for him, every time she felt the cold. It took until he damn-near killed her (x3 which I can also justify and have other theories about, but that's Arthas/Jaina not Varian/Jaina) for her to finally even consider that maybe he truly was beyond saving. ... And of COURSE, it took until after his death for her to find out SHE'D been the one who was right all along, with the anonymous hero retrieving her locket. D< Which just adds about six billion more sympathy points. But yes, case in point: Jaina is loyal beyond measure, a lover to her core, and has recently been crushed in ways many of us can't even fully comprehend.
:3 As you may or may not know, Varian and Arthas grew up like brothers for some time- from the time the child Varian was forced to flee his home until it was rebuilt, so essentially the full latter half of their childhood, maybe plus a few years. Not only are they bound to retain some similarities from this, quirks and what have you, but this means Varian is also one of the last people on Azeroth who KNEW the younger Arthas. That is, he's nigh the only person who could understand in full WHY Jaina mourned, even despite his time as the Lich King. If she reminisced, he could join her, because he knew the man as she remembers him. ... ;3 Not to mention that whole thing about "Varian mourned his own dead wife for 10 frigging years so it's safe to say he can more than understand and sympathize for a similar loss" and whatnot. ^^
All right, so what do we have so far? They're both very passionate, loyal individuals who have clung to memories for years, and while neither NEEDS someone, both do probably deserve it. The whole mourning thing also serves as potential bonding material. But what about other attraction, hm? :3 Like, after that bonding, would they still mesh? Well, we mentioned Varian may have a few similarities to Arthas, but what else?
First of all, let's deal with physical attraction, because it DOES play a part in most healthy romances whether people like it or not. :3 Well, Varian does happen to be pretty similar to Arthas: both are quite tall, largely built (even compared to normal Warcraft human males), fairly light-skinned with a usual light tan, keep their hair long and face shaven, have a more rough than refined appeal, prefer physical combat, bear a few scars, etc. In fact, not a lot of people realize, but Arthas actually even had a similar, if much smaller and more discreet, scar on HIS nose in the same place as Varian's! You can see this in his official artwork such as the first pic if you look on his WoWWiki, as well as on his in-game model in Culling if you zoom in enough!
:3 And now, personality. Unfortunately, due to Tiffin's minimal screen time, I have far more evidence on Jaina's side for this than Varian's, but let's go ahead and look at what I DO have. ^^ Actually, this is what started me on the ship in the first place. x3 I saw a bit of pro-Thrall/Jaina, anti-Varian fanart here on dA, with one comment that was going on about Varian vs Thrall in a battle of romance, attempting to prove that Thrall was the obvious choice. Instead, the more I read, the more I realized all the points used AGAINST Varian would be EXACTLY what would ATTRACT her! ;D After all! Jaina ALREADY chose a big muscle-brained royal extremist human brute over a refined, exotic, intelligent gentlemen when it came to Arthas vs Kael'thas! And in THAT case, she even though Kael was hot, and admitted logically she SHOULD be more attracted to him. 
:3 Still with me? Hopefully? Good! As to evidence of mutual caring feelings, there is of course our favorite quote: "Jaina... Why are you crying?" "It was nothing your majesty.. Just.. I'm proud of my king." :3 Varian's tone here implies quite a good deal of personal concern and caring. Where in JAINA, we can read far more indeed if we look a bit further! ;D This IS, one will recall, not long after Halls of Reflection. In it, she asked Uther how she could fight "my prince, my..." (obviously 'love'). In a rather touching moment, she calls Varian "my king". ;3 This just so HAPPENS to be a perfect correlation. Now, certainly one could argue this coincidence, but personally I think there are just too many other things she could have said for it not to have SOME level of intention. :3 I'm proud of.. you? OUR king? Your progress? Your decision? A tad awkward, but even THE king. But now. She says HER king, as she'd said HER prince. ;3 Even more epic than just 'she's so concerned with how he acts it can move her to tears' with that in the mix, huh? ^^
What of a future for them, then? Well, Jaina DID really want some blonde kids at one point. :3 Anduin wouldn't be hers, or by Arthas, but hey. It's something.
And could Jaina serve as a queen? What about her duty to Theramore, or the Kirin Tor, or everything else on her plate? |3 To this, I'd like to remind everyone that there ARE certain benefits to being able to teleport between continents with as little effort as it takes to blink.
I may or may not have had one other serious point that I'm forgetting, but.. Well obviously if I do I'm forgetting, lol. So now to my final, more trivial points... x3 "DAWW they're so cute togetha!" and "Jaina Wrynn just SOUNDS cool, dammit.

And I understand totally the Zutara thing. Kataang has always left a bad aftertaste in my mouth, and I have always been more of a Taang/Zutara shipper at heart. Sokkla is my first love though. The absolute potential of those two together is mind blowing. So, I'm willing to give this sequel a chance as long as they leave the Sokka ship undefined.

'x3; Now, as an ALTERNATE thing, like all your Modern fan stuff, going purely on personality and not factoring in their canon trying-to-kill-each-other relationship, sure. :3 That could be fun. 'x3; I've been trying since I saw your gallery and been unable to figure out anything that could make it work canonically, though, since, well.. 'xD; She's probably going to spend the rest of her life behind bars and Sokka and Suki were so totally doing it off-screen.. 'x3; I'm NOT bashing or trying to disprove, just saying "I don't get it." Heh. 'x3;
|D But YES Taang. The whole fricking show was so balance/Yin-Yang/harmony/etc. ... xD And then despite two PERFECT and fairly fan-popular relationships which would ALSO follow that, what do they do? The cliche relationship that was predictable since before the series even aired. 'xD; Wth. And then left Toph lonely and... x3 Eh, I'm a massive Zutarian and have been since the very first preview of the saving from pirates scene, but I actually DO like Maiko still. xP Go figure. But like I said, when I ship, I'd just like to see it TRIED, even if it fails. x3 So as long as they leave it open enough that I can continue to insist Zutara happened between series end and later marriages, I'm fine.

And Jaina kept up faith in Arthas for NEARLY A DECADE through a LOT more than just stubborn justified racism. xD .... >3< Also, since Thrall's stepping down and Garrosh is taking over the Horde, I think her opinion on Varian's "warmongering" would change significantly. ... -_- Given Garrosh is just a LITERAL warmonger with NO reasons other than "puny humans are puny", so any level of fighting back can kind of be called self-defense at that point. /hate
