I love the picture, it's so cute they're a good ship. Now on to spreading my headcanon!
I don't think corruption happens naturally, I believe it is caused by a Homeworld weapon, most likely a prototype gem destabilizer.
Actually thinking more, it might not even be a defective weapon. It poofs a gem but they reform wrong, dangerous, and probably in a rebel strong hold but a weapon like that is so dangerous it was probably outlawed.

Well there is evidence to support that. In the latest Centipedle episode when Steven failed to fully heal Centi, Garnet called the corruption "damage from the Diamonds". This coupled with both Lapis and Centi having flashbacks to a huge explosion at the end of the war could mean that the Diamonds can destabilize Gems which causes the corruption.

I know right 😊 head canon/theory practically confirmed. The way the weapon was used is worse then I ever imagined but still corruption is caused by Homeworld technology I guessed right.
Also I think that this could be Jasper's redemption, after being cured she's not with the Earth, or the Crystal Gems she's against Homeworld and anyone who would corrupt a gem, as corruption is the most horrifying thing she'd ever gone through.
