it's from the chinese fable Journey to the West; Leo is Genjo Sanzo, a priest meant to travel to india to retrieve the sacred scrolls of heaven. Β In heaven he was an obstinant, arrogant and jerky apprentice to bhudda himself, but because of his attitude bhudda punished him by sending his soul to earth to be reborn as the Priest his journey for the scrolls is a journey of redemption for his sin against Bhudda
Raph is Sun Wukong; the monkey King and sage rivaling all those under heaven, born on a mountain from a stone, known for causing mischeif mayhem and chaos, the diadem around his head was put there by the Bhodisattva a goddess, for Sanzo to use on Wukong to discipline him form being a troublemaker
Don is Sha Wujing, a river Demon or Kappa, known for being overly aggressive when he fights, having been an example of inventing the word 'overkill' he was punished by the Jade King by being banished to the river he protected, until he was given a chance to redeem himself by serving as bodyguard for wukong and Sanzo
and Mikey is Zhu Bajie, a former general of Heaven's armies, he was punished for over-indulging in Wine, Drink and for flirting with the Jade King's wife, teh Queen of Heaven. Β Punished by being forced to be resurrected as a mortal, his soul was accidentally cast into the womb of a pig and was accidentally reborn a half-pig man onto earth. Β But his punishment remained the same. Β He had to redeem all his heavenly sins by performing good deeds on earth while travelling alongside Sanzo and his company
