Description Heffalumps!!!!"Heffalumps" is the delightful child's name for elephants, first encountered in the book "Winnie-the-Pooh" by A A MilneΒ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heffalump. Somehow it fits those wonderful creatures found in many parts of Africa (threatened in some areas), and on the Indian Sub-Continent. The African Elephant has the genus name Loxodonta and if I asked you what is the most characteristic feature of an elephant, many of you would reply that elephants are big - very big, in fact, the biggest land mammal in the World. Fully grown males are 3-4 metres in height, and can weigh up to 6 tonne; fully grown females are up to 3 metres tall and weigh up to 3 tonnes. We humans are tiny in comparison. Yet, look at the two images below. The first shows a fully grown female strolling past a baobab tree (about 3000 years old), and the second a small family with fully grown females and some youngsters eating and drinking at the edge of the swamp area in Tarangire National Pa

Indeed, Pamela - lots of contrast. I'm not so keen on this one now. I think I need to rework it.

Many Thanks

David

Cute pose! Β Β Β  What do you mean by "call"?Β  Do they manage to call out whist taking this pose?Β  Seems like it would be mighty awkward.

I'm showing my age, Linda, using the phrase "trunk call". That is from days long gone when an operator was needed on a telephone network to connect you to a line for a long distance call. It was known as placing a trunk call.

Cheers

Humm... I'm aware of course an operator was needed here too at one time, but I don't know the term used.Β  I do know however, we in the U.S. and the UK have different terms for things.
Interesting as always, David. ^^

Yes, the trunk thing is a bit odd to our eyes, Rob, but I reckon it is a bit like us carrying a heavy bag - we switch from hand to hand, or tuck it under and arm or whatever to relieve muscle stress. I think that there is also some social communication going on as well. Particular trunk movements and configurations probbaly have some meaning in a group, like "I'm OK, that was good."

Cheers

That's an idea, Rob - but perhaps the elephants use their trunks in a kind of semaphore system which, if we could decipher it, could mean, "Look out Bros, there's another of dem honky jeeps coming with dem damned snappers. Let's do the dust bath routine, and they'll sure shove off!"
