Description HOW TO DO 3D

Well this is something many of my friends asked me to do.
It`s some kinds of an tutorial... but well, not really. More a step by step overview how 3D applications normally work.
Many of you are interested in 3D... but have no idea how it`s done...
So i try do show you how it works . I've done some short an simple videos to give you an idea of how 3D applications work.
Basically there are some steps which are always the same:
-placing a basic object
-changing it into the shape you want to have
-giving the object “textures” or a “material”. That means the colour, transparency, reflection, ect.
-light up your scene to get a realistic or “whatever” lightning of your scene.
-let the computer “render” the image. That means the computer transforms the 3D-environment into a image or a video

Of course these are really the basic steps. This deviation shows how to do 3D in a very simple way. Everything you see is the editor-preview. You can`t see all the tools, animation-timeline, etc. That's not they idea of it.
Its for the ones of you which have no idea about 3D and want to know a bit “how its done”.
Have fun!

IMPORTANT INFOS FOR WATCHING:
The movies unfortunately play only one time, then they stand still. So to watch them again from the beginning, simple press F5 on your keyboard.
The best is you press F5 on every of the 7 movies... so watch first clip, scroll to next, press F5 and watch, scroll to next, press F5 and watch... and so on and so on...
Download time: depending on your download-speed you may have to wait a bit until all videos are loaded and play.

This one I use here is Cinema4D... but there are a lot. Others are Maya, 3D Studio MAX, XSI and Lightwave.

This is really cool--- is there a certain program recommended for making 3D models?

there are a lot... The most common used in the Industry are XSI, Maya, Cinema4D, 3D Studio MAX and Lightwave.
Then there are also programms for free (Freeware) like Blender... maybe not a bad coice if you just want to have a look how it works.
If you are seriously interessted in 3D, then you should probably choose Cinema4D, XSI or Maya... MAX is good as well, but I don't really like how it works... but that's me...
Maya is the big one most big studios use... but it's not really easy to learn. On the other hand, there are TONNS of tutorials (free and as DVDs / CDs) avalible for it.
I really like Cinema4D because it is one of the most easiest to learn and still very professional... Most of these Programms have free Demo Versions.
Do you need more information? For what would you like to use 3D? Just for stills (pictures) or for animated stuff? Do you have any expierience with a 3D Programm?

ah ok, cool. Yeah all these programms are basicly quite the same. Maya is a bit complex for single useres because it was develeped for studios and huge projects with a lot of artists working on the same piece, not for single users. MAX and Cinema4D are more like that, better to control as one person, better to work with.

Oli4D In reply to frostypig [2006-01-15 19:47:51 +0000 UTC]

i used Cinema 4D XL Bundle. Hmm i guess you should go to [link] , there you can find all the infos. i guess the price for the basic version is about 500 US-dollars. But if you are a student, you can get it cheaper. Ask maxon. I`m sure they help you.
There are also 3D-applications for free, such as "Blender". But i never tried it... don`t know how easy it is to learn.

i use Cinema4D. Its a application for professionals, but much easier to learn then the other pro-applications like maya or 3D-Studio MAX.

Oli4D In reply to Butch007 [2005-11-27 17:43:39 +0000 UTC]

hehe, well thanks!
Well, its done in Cinema4D... the software a used to capture the movies in a freeware tool called "camStudio". Then i used flash 8 to turn the AVIs into flash-video and published them on a differend server. the flash-file here on DA has some link to the movies on the different server... so thats how it works.

I'm a Maya user, but I've been looking at Cinema 4D for a while it just keeps getting a better and better feature list every year.

Oli4D In reply to Butch007 [2005-11-27 18:00:40 +0000 UTC]

well i prefer cinema4D cause its really can do almost everything... of course maya is the real big deal... but well, maya was build for big companys... when a lot of artists work on the same thing. Cinema4D is more for single-user or "small" campanies... much easier to use, but still: definitly a pro-application since version 6.
