“You couldn’t even beat me!”

It certainly hadn’t started out like this but the words had become the running joke between them.

Liz’s fight schedule forced her to travel a lot. It’s part of the deal sometimes. Not every fight was in her backyard in Canada, even though she wished it could be. The money or the challenge was just too good not to go on the road from time to time. It had its drudgery, but it wasn’t always bad. Sometimes travel took her to see one of her favorite girls, her most ardent supporter, and one of her very best friends; Shanna. Shanna would always put her up. Always. No questions asked. Such was their friendship. Shanna was also willing to take her to her gym when she was in town to help her stay motivated and hungry. And Shanna knew how to motivate! Whether it was pushing her for 5 more minutes on the bag, 5 more minutes on the stepper, 5 more reps. She was there for her whenever she was needed and in whatever capacity. Shanna cheered for her hard, loved to see Liz succeed and was there to console her when she lost. They made a great team, they were there for each other.

It was early on after a particularly tough defeat that Liz was having a less than stellar training session and Shanna was urging her to pick it up on the heavy bag. Everything she tried to get her to light her fire wasn’t working. Liz didn’t have it in her this day and Shanna finally had enough and let her have it.

“What’s wrong?! You couldn’t even beat me, today!”

Liz just stared at her, dropped her hands and walked to the ring, up the stairs and through the ropes. Silently she beckoned her friend to join her. Shanna wasted little time taking the invite. Liz got into her stance and Shanna wasted little time mirroring her. “Ok, Liz….. let’s see if Im right!”

Less than thirty seconds later Shanna was on the mat tapping out. Liz had been a whirlwind and Shanna couldn’t keep up.

Liz hesitated then she rose and helped Shanna up and as she did Shanna could see in her face that the passion had returned that quickly. They embraced as friends would.

“I see what you did there and I appreciate it. You always seem to know exactly what to say to get me out of my funk.” Liz said as she finally pulled away.

“Yeah, I wish I hadn’t this time though!”

“Well, you poked the bear! That’s what you get, Hun.” Liz said with a smile and a wink. “Oh and because you were sassy and then lost you are buying tonight!” Shanna was thrilled at the sudden attitude change of her friend, she was more than happy to oblige.

Nowadays this is how it always goes. Liz comes to town, they work hard together, Shanna pushes her just a bit more, then says the words and off to the ring they go to settle the score. At first Shanna struggled but slowly she learned and the sessions got longer, much longer and much harder for Liz. Some of it was just plain old exhaustion at the end of a hard workout, but most of it was Shanna improving. She was no longer just a workout partner, she had become a fierce competitor in the ring as well. Shanna also would secretly sacrifice herself at times to make sure Liz would use her footwork, or her ground game or her wrestling skills. Making sure that every chance she got, she helped Liz improve. Liz didn’t win them all anymore and she was impressed with her friend’s attitude, determination, and work. Mostly though, she was thankful for her friendship.

Today the scenario would be no different. In the ring Shanna got right up to her friend, almost jabbing a finger in her chest. “Tonight is the night you buy, Sweetie.”

“Oh, you think so, Hun? We’ll see, lets do it!”

Ninety minutes later they sat, had some drinks and food and when it came time to pay, Shanna settled the bill as she always did, win or lose.

Liz would start to object and Shanna would cut her off, eschewing the usual back and forth.

“My town, My treat” was becoming the new mantra.

I've wanted to pay a little homage to the friendship between and for a little while now and this is what I came up with. I don't consider myself a great writer but it was fun to do and sort of describes how I think it might play out between the two of them. These two ladies are my friends and I'm so grateful for their continued support for what I do here. Thanks so much ladies!
