My second drawing with Paint Sai.I would've added more highlights and shades but I ended up having so many layers I got confused and couldn't shade the hair more for some reason.
I still need to look at more tutorials.

yessss the hair had alone 20 layers, and the skin something around 18... the rest are just small effects and unneeded layers, but that werent good to keep on the original layer. hard is to find yourself on them... youre welcome sit

Gosh, why so many layers for the skin?
The hair I can understand, but wouldn't skin just need a shade and a highlight?

kinda... i used the flat color layer, then a "infinite light" shade layer, a highlight layer for the same source, focal shadow and light layer, reflection layer, backlight, & backup layers for effects... all that together gave me all that layers

focus on artificial lights first, no drop shadows for now, only object shadows and backlight, these are the very basics

and this one is more after effective and depends a lot of the style [link]
actually, i recommend you to NOT USE DRAWINGS as reference, use real pics, cause every artist will commit little mistakes even if unnoticeable for amateurs' eyes, use drawings only for specific stuff, or things that cannot exist on reality (then you use the logic and knowledge) taking a look on anathomy bookx and seeing how the bones are placed and how muscles are linked on them is very important, with time you'll have the image of human's anathomy on your head and will need less guide and construction lines.

I'll probably buy an anatomy book sometime. Even though I know the basics, I don't know all the muscles and bones. Which I know I can learn, I used to know them all back when I took biology.

I actually just bought a BUNCH of books from visual storytelling to writing plots and comedy. I"ll be sure to include an anatomy book, as well as some more drawing ones. Hopefully next year will be a good start for me. ^^

hmmm, recently i be needing some storyboarding and plot writing... the only book material in therms of reference i have is manga... im really needing more "serious business" books, since manga is way too simplistic and may lock me on many things.
hah, i use to do the same, on the year swap, time to start with very new stuff (e.g. this year, i started with my first tablet drawings XD. im planning to begin the next year with digital painting, i have 2 months to train it

hahah, i'm trying to begin one, but im not being lucky with it, the wholes story is perfect for a Game, but not for a comic... im also on a project with other guy thats writing a story and i may draw it this was a test panel [link] but he aborted this one and now he is writing a better one.
thanks, on my test painting,s im discovering things that i didnt know i could do XDDD like this [link] and i dont make idea of how to paint in real life too, i may learn it someday, but for now what i want to learn is that damn color pencils and markers XD i destroy every drawing i do with them

Have you tried grouping the different layers based on what they're for, and check the "Clipping Group" box for every layer you intend to do the shading on? That way, after you do the base color, the colors you use for the shadows and highlights don't go outside of the boundaries of the base color, so there's less cleaning up you'll have to do afterwards.
Disregard this comment if you've already gotten that far in SAI; I'm not entirely sure what skill level you're at with it.

Because drawing characters as wistful and forlorn is fun. I know, I usually do. XD And then I draw them with missing limbs and all scarred and stuff. But that is because I love ruining a good picture with some blood.
