Did you know he was originally meant to have big lips, not a beak, but they were scared that'd be racist (since it's a common stereotype in Japanese things for the "black" characters to have big lips, ex: [link] Mr. Popo from DBZ) so they changed it to the beak? I don't know why because I never considered Skullkid as black, but I think maybe (I can't remember exactly) Skullkid was also supposed to be completely black, like Mr. Popo, so they changed both things because the "completely black" and "big lips" were both considered offensive by some.

Yeah i read about that ^^ the face used to be all shadowed and black with glowing eyes and the lips
I like the version with more grainy skin and the beak, it's a bit more scarecrow-like hehe
