I know this is old, but they would've had to let him go because the prosecution fucked up. She made him sign a plea deal, which isn't "going free" and more "come quietly, and we won't kick your ass as hard."

She did as a matter of fact. During that infamous interview, she acknowledged that what was done to the girl was horrifying, and the prosecution had an "open/shut" case until it was found that those prosecutors were meddling with evidence.
She was more laughing at the sheer irony that the guys she was hired to fight did more to help her defendant than she ever would have.

Yes, but as you said, she didn't really have a choice. She was assigned to it, so she had to do it. That's how it works as a public defender. Some times you got an innocent person, some times you don't.
