It's kindve one of those trends/stereotypes when it comes to main characters (male anyway)
I think it's some sorta way to make them seem more "dynamic" or something. (Or it's better than a bowl cut or something)

Prolly. Side characters usually have more exaggerated hairdos compared to main ones. Perhaps it's to help "empathize" with them or something.
