Description Yay for Laby fan art! This was for the challenge prompt breaking free. Does anyone else find it amusing it's the 13th image to be completed?

About the Piccie

One of the things I love about Labyrinth is all the interpretations you can take of it. Here I went for the interpretation of the movie where the Labyrinth and its creatures, maybe or maybe not Jareth, were basically created by Sarah's incredibly powerful imagination.

I've always been dubious about it, but I admit I liked the idea more since reading 's powerful comic 'Only Forever' (Page 7 optional ending with links to other pages here: [link] )

So here we have Sarah, dreaming her own pleasant dreams, the beginning of another world's materialisation.

Or she could just be being watched over

Do you think I should up the brightness a bit? I'm worried the piccie is a bit dull and hard to see...

Credits and Other Links

Aaand used (subtly, I hope) a texture from pack Victorian Dreams [link] .

Wow, what a lot of AN to say nothing! *creeps away*

I have a different take, but that is the sheer beauty of the movie. I write laby an fic, romantic of course.
That said, I love your interpretation, though did u make Jareth more concrete and colorful on purpose?
I just love this so much! Wonderful, beautiful job!

I know - I love that you can take so many interpretations from the movie! This was just one. And yes, I did make Jareth more solid on purpose: thanks for picking up on that ^_^

What's your fanfic about? And thankyou very much!

Thank you for your interest!!!! Wee.
Cannot wait to get it up to my Laby lovers. I wrote it for all the amazing artists here on DA who share my intense love of Laby and the Youtube gals (and some of those vids are amaaaazing...I rec Bury Me Deep in Your Heart which inspired my novel).

Well, it takes place in Aboveground and Underground...it is about Sarah living in Philly and she goes to Nyack NY (where the opening was filmed with the owl) where she grew up to visit Linda's grave. Jareth has come above to find her and now Sarah is raising a stubborn skate rat 12 yr old Toby (Tobs). Its about him finding her and then Toby gets stolen by Jareth's gorgeous, shallow and evil fae sister Jesabel who plans to have Tobs marry her equally evil daughter.... and it goes on and on. I am loving writing it. It is very erotic. I must say...I worry about that. But it satisfies my...longing shall I say. LOL. I have a lot of pent up lust for that man! Afraid people may be turned off but the sex...but...
LOL. Plan to have it up on DA (maybe!) in July.
But yeah...you are very very talented.

OpenLocks In reply to Violetgoblindream [2011-05-05 10:35:57 +0000 UTC]

Wooo this could be very interesting! Jesabel... great choice of names! Fits in well with Jareth's and the meanings - I like the sound of the plot.

Hmm, can't say I'm into erotica. You may well lose a few potential readers for that, but equally... others may start reading it just for that!

And thankyou!

Violetgoblindream In reply to OpenLocks [2011-05-05 22:51:43 +0000 UTC]

LOL!

I know I am going to deeply edit it down of erotica when it goes forth. That was pretty much the game plan. I wrote the smut for me.

I got into Ann Rice's Sleeping Beauty Trilogy when I was in college thanks to my BFF at the time, so....

Thanks for the compliments! Squee! Yeah, I picture her looking like Christina A. but in an eleborate masquarade gown...very French.

I love the symbolism of the movie the Labyrinth. The movie Labyrinth really borrows quite a bit from the story "Alice in Wonderland" and many of the symbols are the same (Alice too has to pass through a Labyrinth). It is said that before one of the great ancient temples was built a huge Labyrinth (Herodotus' Egyptian labyrinth, which has long since disappeared but was believed to be in what was then a part of ancient Egypt). Before entering the Labyrinth was the words "Know thyself". Part of the premise of the story "Labyrinth" is the question of does one really know oneself and what is reality... or is reality really nothing more than a dream. So too in Alice in Wonderland, Alice faces this same question when she encounters the sleeping king. She is told that she is a part of the king's dream... or does the king exist only in her dreams? There is another story of a Cretan Labyrinth, which was an elaborate maze-like construction built for King Minos of Crete and designed by the architect Daedalus and his son Icarus who were ordered to build it to hold the Minotaur. In this tale, the hero Theseus must transverse the maze to kill the Minotaur by chopping off its head ("Off with her head!" "Fiery 1: Hey! Hey! Her head don't come off! Sarah: Of course it doesn't! Fiery 2: Hey, lady! Where are you going with a head like that?", The be-headed god or goddess form is a common but little understood ancient religious symbol) . It is important to understand in this story that the Bull was representative of the Sun god. The Labyrinth, in its complex paths, represents the human mind. Theseus was in effect symbolically becoming a god by trans-versing the Labyrinth and destroying the symbol of god. He then follows a golden string, gold an ancient symbol of god, to find his way back out of the maze. Alice: "I wonder if I've been changed in the night? Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is 'Who in the world am I?' Ah, that's the great puzzle!"
Suggest watching the movie "Pan's Labyrinth"

OpenLocks In reply to DarkRubyMoon [2011-01-20 09:37:19 +0000 UTC]

Wow, you really have the mind for this kind of thing! I've seen some of the similarities between Labyrinth and Alice in Wonderland, and Theseus' labyrinth, but never in that much detail! You've really got me with the "Off with the head" comments. I hadn't come across that in mythology before, and I'm quite intrigued

I take it you have some interest in mythos, then? Not everyone knows Theseus or Daedalus XD. I wonder if it's at all significant that it was Icarus involved in building a labyrinth for what you say stands as a representative of the sun-god? Kinda brings in three dimensions: Icarus, who died in arrogance 'flying too close to the sun'; Daedalus, who kept his submissive, careful place; Theseus who transversed the challenge...

Thanks for the comment!

The beheaded goddess figure is most commonly found in ancient Indian art. The most common form is called Chhinnamasta [link] (wikipedia link) "Chhinnamasta (Sanskrit: เค›เคฟเคจเฅเคจเคฎเคธเฅเคคเคพ, Chinnamastฤ, "She whose head is severed"), often spelled Chinnamasta and also called Chhinnamastika and Prachanda Chandika, is one of the Mahavidyas, ten Tantric goddesses and a ferocious aspect of Devi, the Hindu Divine Mother. Chhinnamasta can be easily identified by her fearsome iconography. The self-decapitated goddess holds her own severed head in one hand, a scimitar in another." Some pictures include * [link] * [link] * [link] * [link] There are very similar ancient depictions in Mayan and Aztec art as well... though it would take me some time to find an example. I believe Lady Coatlicue or Goddess Lady Coyolxauhqui are depicted in this manner. It is interesting that two religions so far separate have very similar iconography. The interpretations vary for this symbolism greatly from meaning everything from the idea that god(dess) sacrificed him/herself to create the universe to god(dess) is insane and has imagined our existence. You can find similar ideas of a self-sacrificing deity in virtually every religion...and even atheism has the big bang. I suspect... but can not prove, that the beheaded Goddess figure, with enough research, can be found in other regions and religions of the world.

No upping the brightness. I liked how this looked like a generic darkish background on the preview, and then, when I zoomed in, an entirely new layer of people and creatures were revealed.

Love the faded goblin faces, and the glittery purpleness. And it's interesting that Jareth's the most solid-looking character of them all--like he's breaking out of the dream and into the real world. There's one interpretation of the title

OpenLocks In reply to AylaElphabaMidna [2009-08-25 02:21:12 +0000 UTC]

I love it, my dear! As to whether it should be brighter -- me, personally, I would probably make it a teensy bit brighter if I were the artist. But that's just me -- the girl who manages to render art that have women with swords and spears posed through their arms! Looks like the colors and contrast are pretty balanced, so it's really a judgment call for the artist here. Did you think you'd get off easy? :-P

Only, I'm not sure it's made any difference, and particularly any complimentary difference. Do you mind taking a look?
