If depression was purely mental then medications would not work for it. Not only that there is strong genetic evidence that depression disorders genetic. One such evidence is that people with depression tend to have offspring that suffer with it as well. Also people with neurological disorders such as autism tend to have comorbid disorders such as depression.

If one needed to experience something traumatic in order to experience depression then people living cushier lives would not have depression.
