Hmm, I don't have really any specific way of doing it so it's hard to say :/
I would recommend you to look up pictures of real smoke and try to replicate how it looks.
Anyhow, I put a little progress picture here for you to see: Smokeref
My approach is very messy, I start with a brush that has the opacity value rather down and start drawing shapes. After that it's all detailing.
