Oh dear...

Sometimes, things go wrong. And during the delivery, something went horribly wrong.

At first things seemed to go smoothly. Dancer went into labour sometime late at night, and she soon gave birth to a very healthy, strong filly with dark slitted eyes and dark patches around the eyes. Overjoyed, we waited eagerly to see what the next foal would turn out like.

However something went dreadfully wrong. We hadn't realised it, but Dancer had infact been carrying triplets. The two last foals seemed to be trying to leave the womb at the same time, both flailing slightly as they were squeezed out. The first out was a horribly deformed, premature little filly, with no nostrils or eyes, and no back legs. Dr Raleigh immediately put the poor thing down, knowing she wouldn't survive by herself.

The last to slide out was a tiny little colt, with long gangly legs and a speckled coat. There was a soft gasp of shock as the colt opened his eyes, revealing a pair of demonic black eyes with tiny red pupils.

Both the surviving foals were quickly dried and sent off to lie beside their exhausted mother, and Victoria of Mistery Stables was called up, to be informed about Dancer's delivery. With a promise of a representative arriving by the end of the week, we all bedded down - tired but happy.

Later that week, we went out to the paddock to check on Dancer and her foals in the field, and were met with a rather sad sight - the two foals stood together a short distance away from their dam, who was laid out on the grass a short distance away.

You see, twins are stressful enough for a mare, and for an old lady like Dancer, the strain of carrying and delivering 3 foals must have been abit too much. Hence, in gaining two new lives, we have lost a very dear old mare - she'll be joining her son Maleficent in death.

Anywho, the little guy on the left will remain here at SPaVES while his sister on the right will be transferred back to MS with her sire.
