Description I've been bit by something. Tell me, is the Big Four / Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons fandom in any way viral or infectious? Because I'm pretty sure that's the only reason I'm doing these things.

I actually rather like the Big Four as seasons idea, though I made a couple of minor tweaks for personal preference. I'll explain everything one by one here:

Hiccup, Spirit of Autumn and Change. He actually made it to old age before he became a spirit, and is a bit unusual in that he can appear to be any age at any time. He can control the changes if he wants, but when he lets go of said control it tends to sort of drift slowly and randomly back and forth. This can make conversations with him rather interesting, as in the course of one he may morph from a young teen to an old man or vice versa, all with the gradual speed of a minute hand inching along around a clock's face. Toothless has joined him in spirithood, and they have retained their prosthetics as well. Also, the cane depicted there is one Hiccup crafted for himself upon reaching late middle age, and it serves him a dual purpose: one, keeping his balance and easing the weight on his bad legs as he aged...and two, with a twist of a hidden mechanism to unlock it, a slender blade can be drawn from the cane's housing, rendering him capable of defending himself, often to the absolute shock of any enemy who looked at him and made the mistake of seeing a feeble, crippled old man.

Hiccup puts trees to sleep in preparation for winter, among other things. His is a role of ushering in change for the good of everything; after all, if certain things didn't hibernate or migrate or have warning of the winter to come, they could die.

It's a bit of a toss-up right now whether he or Merida are the oldest of the Seasonal spirits. One way or another, he's eventually adopted some slightly more modern clothing (okay, so the sweatervest and scarf and stuff are a bit dated, but hey, after almost one thousand years keeping up with changing fashions just isn't one's concern) as has she. Speaking of whom...

Merida, Spirit of Summer and Freedom. Yes, I know most people put "courage" there, but really, I think what drove Merida the most in her film was the idea of Freedom. She wanted it for herself and wound up giving it to her peers and even to her parents as well. She wasn't the only one being pressed into the marriage thing, after all, and her Mother was bound by her own uptight personality and views, while her Father was bound by his obsession with killing Mor'du. Merida also freed her Mother from the curse she made the mistake of putting on her, freeing Mor'du from his own curse indirectly and inadvertently as she did so.

Besides, Freedom takes Courage to find and to fight for.

Merida brings not only summer warmth but also summer storms...though sometimes not even she can coax up a little rainfall due to the heat.

At any rate, blue duster, gradiated dress, a cloak pin which was hers way back in the living day as well. I expect she shoots fire arrows and travels through flame as well. She died as a young woman, younger than any save Jack and in circumstances just as tragic.

Rapunzel, Spirit of Spring and Life. Again, I know the general consensus is Creativity. I gave Rapunzel Life not only because of her healing hair, but because, again, it was a longing for life - real, actual, bursting-at-the-seams LIFE - that drove her goals and her story. She dreamed, not in the sense of Sandman and what he protects, but in the sense of one who dreams of the future, of where one wants their life to go, what one wishes to become and grow into. THAT is what I see Rapunzel protecting, as she spurred the people of the Ugly Duckling to admit to (and go out and discover) what they wanted most in life - their "dreams."

I'm not yet sure how she died, but I do know it was somewhere in the middle of life, after she had become Queen of Corona and ruled the kingdom for a good while. When she became a spirit her age was reverted back to that of the film and her long, magical hair was returned to her.

While Hiccup puts things to sleep and sends them away in preparation for winter, Rapunzel wakes them up, calls them back, and watches over their new branches, saplings, and families.

I'm the least certain of her outfit, being pretty sure she's got all kinds of plantlife wound up in her hair and absolutely sure she got a frying pan from somewhere in the interest of self-defense and quite certain she's still running around in long skirts and bare feet, but not knowing anything else. Right now it looks rather drab and I've no idea how to fix it within the constraints of at least quasi-modern fashion, since I'd like all of them to have made wardrobe adjustments of some kind. Jack certainly did within those three hundred years, and this lot are far older than he.

---

Yes, I'm obsessed enough to be writing fanfic one-shots. There'll be one for each of these three detailing their death and subsequent rise to spirithood; each one has a different story and a different manner of falling. I'll be uploading these to FF.N under the appropriate crossover archives, each being a single cross with RotG. My problem then is the planned one-shot where Jack meets each of these characters for the first time and perhaps interacts with them a bit beyond then, because that's a crossover between RotG and all three of these at once. FF.N only allows you to pick two archives in a crossover. Four is out of the question. So then, do I just pick one at random? Or do I split Jack's one-shot into three sections, one for each character, and upload these as much shorter second chapters attached to each initial oneshot?

Must get back to work; too much to write, too little time, too many shiny distractions.

His design is official and set in stone. I didn't need to re-work him to fit the seasonal theme.

There are lots of stories about these four as the seasons out there, all of them at least a little different from each other.

I'll see what I can do.

I really like the backstories you made for the Big Four and I totally agree with your choices in terms of what each person is a guardian of. Your explanations were sound and totally made sense. Great job!

Thank you! It's really good to hear that they worked for somebody; I was sort of half-expecting people to pop out of the woodwork to insist that I got Rapunzel and Merida all wrong when I changed their non-seasonal aspects.

But for Rapunzel I was also thinking of innocence because she was so naive at times. Since the guardians are supposed to guard some characteristic applicable to children, I was thinking of innocence because life is a somewhat broad term. However, I still agree with the you portrayed them.

She is very innocent, I agree, and I can see her treasuring that. I passed over that concept when I thought of it, though, because while it's a big part of who she is herself it's not so much what she tried to encourage in others. Kind of like Merida being brave, but seeking/bringing about freedom, or Hiccup being intelligent but bringing about change.

Personally, I'm not making them Guardians of Childhood, despite having secondary aspects. Jack can be the special one in this group, the one to act as a bridge between the Guardians and the Seasons.

I suppose that makes sense. And you're right in that the three don't have to be guardians of childhood.

I looooove it
I loved the story of Hiccup! with everything that you're playing an old Hiccup always feels his personality without being childish very good work!
at first I was a little confused because didn't understand why he disappear from time to time but later I could understand it hehe
I can't wait to read the others! *o* you showed after a possible meeting between the guardians or just on how all they get it to be? whatever you decide I know I'll love

Hiccup was tricky, I felt. Not only is this the first time I’ve ever written his character, but it was also his character plus several decades full of life, in very unusual circumstances besides. It was a lot of guesswork and assumptions on my part. I’m glad it worked for you, though!

I’m planning mostly to show how Hiccup, Merida, and Rapunzel came to be, and then Jack’s one-shot is to be his first meetings/interactions with each of them since we know his rebirth story already. From then on, who knows? I might occasionally come out with a drabble or brief one-shot about other interactions amongst the Four. I haven’t any concrete plans that far out.

Thank you!

Hiccup you adorable little -- is that a sweatervest.

I'd definitely be interested in reading these oneshots. As for how to classify them, I can't help you there because frankly I haven't posted on FF.net in a while so I don't know how the format's changed.

It is a sweatervest. Innit cute?

I'm also vaguely considering uploading them on DA as well, though I know that fanfiction doesn't tend to get the attention here that it does on FF.N, naturally. At least DA won't care about just how many things are being crossed over at the same time.

you should totally post on archive of our own then, the cross overs and tags are a lot more detailed and make more sense. You can do multi-crossovers as well as differentiate movie/book verse and stuff, also more user friendly imho.
just a recommendation. :3

I've considered it, but I'm always a little reluctant to open a new account on yet another site. I might do it just for these things, though...we'll see, once I get there in the writing process. Right now I'm still working on Merida's bit; she's giving me a little trouble with wording, and I'm not even writing the accents in the dialogue!

For a second I thought it said Autumnal Alliteration and I thought, well that's a very self-aware title.
