Description Troodon is dead! Long live Latenivenatrix!

I wanted to try to bring the new robust-jawed giant troodontid... sorry, stenonychosaur to life, and somehow went from a quick sketch to this. My original intention was to make it sort of a wolf-stork, but the end result is more similar to a certain African bird than I intended.

The bare skin on the snout isn't scaly, though it is somewhat keratinized. Instead it is inspired by the gnarly warty appearance of facial skin in some birds which (so I'm told) makes it less vulnerable to injury. It's also possible that the snout could have looked more like the cere of accipitriformes or the skin on anatid bills. Maybe that's a variant I'll try later.

In case anyone's wondering, both the cranium and the postcranium are very fragmentary with the neck missing entirely. Considering the proportions of the mandible, I suspect there might be some Utahraptor-like surprises there waiting for us.

No, pretty sure it's just as extinct as every other non-avian dinosaur.

I'm so glad this happened, because I always pronounced Troodon as TroΓΆdon and everyone looked at me as if I'm some kind of alien

Osmatar In reply to Stolpergeist [2017-08-21 21:14:08 +0000 UTC]

I could never figure out if you're supposed to pronounce the "ΓΆ" in TroΓΆdon as an actual "ΓΆ". Then I found out most people just spell it as an "o" anyway...

Beautiful work, and an instant favorite!

I don't necessarily think the jaw is overly robust as compared to other derived troodontids - the way the dentary is articulated in the skeletal makes it look like that, but short, deep dentaries are pretty par for the course here. I like the texture of the nonfeathered parts a lot.

Osmatar In reply to pilsator [2017-08-20 06:01:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Could be that the mandible is wrong. My original version had a less pronounced dentary, but Midiaou convinced me to make the jaw more robust. I don't have access to the original paper so I've had to rely on second hand information.

Eh, I'm sticking with Troodon. It's easier to say than Late Night Hysterics, or however you pronounce it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Osmatar In reply to JakeXKale [2017-08-20 06:02:31 +0000 UTC]

I have no idea how English-speakers would pronounce it. Fortunately the pronunciation of Latin, Ancient Greek and Finnish are very close to each other so I don't have to worry about it!

Osmatar In reply to HUBLERDON [2017-08-18 05:43:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the teeth Troodon was based on aren't really diagnostic. So now we get Stenonychosaurus back and Latenivenatrix in addition to that.
