I've never seen George Lucas depicted without a beard and mustache... it threw me off.

No prob. I heavily inferred from context, myself, and Otis's rendition reminds me a bit of the Lucas depicted in the (most excellent) webcomic parody Blue Milk Special. Although now that I think about it, I don't think they've shown their Lucases (yes, plural) without a beard, either.

why wouldn't he shoot first? hes a smuggler, a pirate essentially. Probably not the type to play honorably when his own life is on the line.

What's the big deal anyway! It was mostly self defense! Han Solo was just trying to keep from being dragged off to face Jabba The Hutt on his own terms! That's not murder, it common sense!
