Description
“ A single bird circles above you. The canopy here is spread thin, the fir trees doing little to shield you from the avian or its abode. You know it’s nocturnal by the way it moves with the night, like it was made for this type of freedom that you could only ever dream of, not that you would in the first place. No doubt it’s hunting. Field mice and voles are common, you can hear them every now and then rooting around the dirt. Only, it makes the mistake of picking a target nearby. You don’t need to see where it lands to know it’s caught food that should be the Tomb’s. But you can change that, can’t you? “
Birds have been his bane since the Collapse. The longer he followed the trail of stones the Tomb had left behind, the more there seem to be. Being so utterly alone under the watch of Them and Their feathered legion of eyes made Stahl feel small, exposed, vulnerable.
He does not like it one bit.
So when one finally makes the mistake of landing too close to the thickest of this thin grove of trees he'd bedded beneath for the night, he thought he had it. Two silent bounds was all he needed. Two. The owl wouldn’t know what hit it. But then his paws crunched into a snow patch, and the owl’s face swiveled in his direction, moon-reflected eyes glaring into his.
He knew he made a mistake.
Spreading its wings with a speed Stahl did not expect from a bird that size, the owl lifted off the ground with a shrill cry. Transfixed by the bird’s stare, the blue wolf lost his stride and went stumbling into the dirt as the owl flew away, taking its prize vole with it.
It wouldn’t be until the sun rose that Stahl would push himself to his feet and move on.

No. No, he can't change it. :[ My magic 8ball said "Outlook not so good". I gotta follow the magic 8ball lawsTM, sorry. This takes about 1 week before he fully catches up with the Tomb.
I was originally planning to chip at this piece throughout the week but the prompt speckledplanet gave me sent a siren off in my brain and I somehow knocked it out in less than a day.
