He doesn't remember much about it, but there is a resemblance in the sparkly eyes.
When I first saw Yamask I thought it was a super cute pokemon, and then I read the Pokedex entry. OMG, this changes pokemon forever. O_O;;;
Emily and I made up a theory that a person must have pulled a Ninetail's tail and thus was given the 1000 year curse and is now paying the price as a Yamask.
OMG JAMES HAS A YAMASK IN THE ANIME! It's going to evolve into a coffin and kill him with the hug of it's ghost hands. LOL

Here's another good theory.
Chandelure's flames burn up people's spirits, leaving the body behind, and the spirits burned up in its ominous flame lose their way and wander this world forever.
So perhaps Yamasks are like Chandelure Burn Victims. It would also explain why they are all black, like their soul got burned so bad that their face peeled off, and the rest was charred black. Poor little thing.

I always thought that maybe a Trainer died trying to protect their Pokemon, thus became a Yamask

That Yamask must've been a really happy guy when he was alive. Yamasks make me feel a little sad, but they're so cute at the same time.
