YES!!! Thank you! This was mine & my best friend's opinion as well when we watched the movie as well. Jacob seems like a total sweetheart and doesn't engage in Edward's weird, stalker-ish behavior even though he likes her, not to mention he's beautiful! Even Jacob's friends were cute. We were like, "OMG! We wanna live on the reservation!"
And you're right, Edward's presence seems to only serve to make Bella moody, irrational, reckless & finally suicidal - not exactly role model traits that should be emulated by girls in love.

Okay. Remember that "obsession" Jacob had with Bella? Well, later on (think it was in New Moon) they introduced the concept of werewolves bonding with their mates on first sight. Of course, we ALL realized that Jacob had bonded with Bella. Who in the meantime was going all suicidal because Edward and the Cullens had left.
She jumps off a cliff- not really to commit suicide. Just for some weird thrill. He comes back and they're back together. She makes him swear to turn her. He refuses to do so unless they- hear this- GET. MARRIED.
You can imagine Jacob's reaction to this whole mad issue. And Bella's father.
But they do get married. Have a very strange honeymoon on Esme's private island. Run home because Bella's pregnant. And dying. The baby's half- vampire and killing her.
They turn her just after this monster baby is born (about two/ three months to term, I think?)
Jacob bonds with the half/ human, half/ vampire baby. Because, of course, he'd had that "obsession" with Bella cause she's the baby's (that hadn't even been CONCEIVED yet, mind you) mother.
