They do belong to the same family.
Unfortunately I have only managed to find 2 different plants from this family in Malta.

There are a lot of species within the Stapelia family. Unfortunately we only get a few of them here

the stapelias are considered as being the orchid equivalent of the cactus family.
I only noticed the polka dots after taking the photo

Wow, the patterns make this thing really interesting. Beauty in all it's glory, I'd say! I think this picture would look better with somewhat less DOF, though. Or else, more. Right now it's unclear which parts you wanted to have in focus, and which parts you didn't want to have in focus. That's just some advice for next time, don't take it the wrong way.

Poor you. Maybe invest in a DSLR then! I know they're expensive but.. If you take a 'startermodel' like a 400/300D it shouldn't be too expensive.

I have the 350D which is a DSLR but the macro lens I would like to get is close to 400 sterling

I love the various plants that use scavengers for pollination, it's so alien and dark to the average human psyche. I know someone whose Stapelia bloomed and the smell was so overpowering she had to put it outside. Then the neighbors complained, so she buried it.

That spot in her yard attracted curious vultures for weeks!

Gorgeous shot.

Ha, I'm afraid I'm with the majority on this one: I thought it looked like some sort of starfish in the thumbnail too. It's certainly not like the cactus blossoms I've seen around here lately. I love the warm speckles of color though, it gives it character. Fabulous shot, as always.

Thanks again dear sis

I suppose I agree with you there, they certainly appear to be so.
Oh my, so they smell bad? Definitely not something to put in your garden then. What a wonderful whiff you must've got while trying to get the photo.
You're very welcome.
