Description H Y P N O B A B E

There were times where I worried this one might do me in, but, dare I say that it was totally worth it? This is a custom Aequis (desert type) for lynxalittle with plumage based on a rufous legged owl. I took some artistic liberty to cater to Aequis anatomy, and to save my eyeballs a wee bit. Those wing coverts are murder, I tell ya! (Then again, I'm mostly blaming the masking fluid mishap for my struggle.) Somehow the hackles/mane were oddly easy. (Why am I like this.)

Desert types are still my personal favorite. Fight me!

Winsor and Newton watercolors, Caran d'Ache supracolor pencils, and touches of gouache/white gel pen on Arches 140 lb hot press watercolor paper, 15.5  x 11.5 inches, 39.37 x 29.21 cm.

Another character sheet - this one looks awesome (like the one I saw before - that looked great, too).
I love the "clarity" in your design, and all the details. And - I can imagine very well that those wing-patterns were lots of work... but it looks great

Thank you so much! I do definitely struggle with keeping a design that will read crisp, but is also subject to slightly more natural lighting/shade. This one is one of my personal favorites, despite how much problem solving I had to do to get it to work! (Or maybe it's because of that?)

Beautiful job, inspiring and well designed. Clearly done with a scientific knowledge of animal anatomy! Keep up the great work!

Thanks so much! I'd still love to do a more technical breakdown of both their skeletal and muscular anatomy when I have time and more references!

top notch work, akin to a scientific illustration for dinosaurs and animals it's like.

This is my way of keeping in touch with my roots: a genuine love of scientific and natural history illustration. Thanks!

I can't imagine how many hours of work this took, but it's spectacular!

(And here I thought your Mountain Osprey one was a guaranteed hand-cramper,  but THIS'n--wow!)

I think this one logged closer to 40 hours for the final? No way to really know since I'm afraid to time myself, but I feel like most average around 30. Usually if I work straight through on my free time, it's about two weeks. Thankfully, watercolors/brushes are so much easier on the tendons than straight colored pencil!

Thank you so much!

That striping sounds like it was a nightmare to do, but gosh golly, it ended up looking so great!

Ah, scatter camoflage may be an magnificent thing to look at for like 5 minutes, but I can certainly see why painting it for hours is not so much of an enjoyment for the eyes. Nature sure knows how to brainfuck.

I don't like the fusion of beak and teeth as much. It looks kinda odd. Anyway, good anatomy work, and the colors and the shading are just top notch! The feathery mane looks surprisingly natural. Good job there, as well!

Nature really loves to leave eyes out of whack now and again, yes!

For the mouth, the "beak" is more just a keratinous upper lip appendage than a real beak, its purpose is mostly a grooming tool: the inside edge is lined with little tooth like structures to preen feathers. It can be lifted up out of the way to let the real teeth do the scary work! (Still working out the little details on this as time goes!)

Ah man, I can absolutely see how you might think this one would do you in, what extreme levels of detail in this beautiful creature! I find this truly inspiring, your time, hard work and dedication to these creatures, always makes them turn out so beautiful! I love the colors on this one~
I need to learn to have the patience to do such detailed and beautiful work, maybe someday? xD

Thanks so much! I like to do little material tests to figure out feather marking methods for each one before I move to the final piece, sometimes letting the shape of a brush work for you can be the best method, but it definitely takes some experimenting and patience!

And yes! If you keep at it, you can!

Awww thanks! This one wanted to end me, but I liked it too much to give up. I do actually like the front facing portrait for this one, especially as front facing portraits have never been a forte of mine!

Thank you so much! Barring and "spangling" on feathers is always a trip to paint and draw, I gotta make sure it looks readable but not so repetitive that it looks like a weird printed pattern.

Same, actually! Despite things throwing me a curveball a couple of times: my masking fluid pen blorped all over the wing coverts in the big pose. Fun fixing that!

Don't we love doing traditional art? I know the struggles so well. I'm sorry this happened to you. It was worth all the struggles though, such an amazing piece.
