Description I couldn't find an image with size comparisons of different Cenozoic animals, so I made one myself

So in this chart you'll find one average sized (male):

Homo Sapiens (human)
Indricotherium (Paraceratherium/baluchitherium)
Elasmotherium ("unicorn"..!)
Elotherium (/Entelodon)
Gomphotherium (much like a modern elephant, except it has two extra tusks in the lower jaw)
Panthera Leo Spelaea (You know these! Cave lions )
Smilodon (saber-toothed cat/tiger.)
Dinofelis (like a smilodon, only smaller.)
Canariomys Bravoi (Tenerife Giant Rat, only existed on tenerife, but added it anyways)
Bos Primigenius (Aurochs, the huge ancestor of domestic cattle.)
Equus Ferus (Tarpan, a European Wild horse)
Crocuta Spelaea (Cave Hyana)
Canis Dirus (Dire wolf... I was tempted to draw glowing green eyes, bangs and tribal tattoos on this one...)
Megaloceros (Irish Elk)
Ursus Spelaea (Cave bear)
Pinguinus Impennis (Great Auk)

---megafauna, huh? Pretty cool

Many of these animals didn't live at the same time. For example, elotherium died out about 20 million years before the first cave lion appeared. The Aurochs, Tarpan, Great Auk and Giant rat existed up to modern time and was (relative to the history of evolution) only recently extinct.

There is a lot of neat animals from this time, and not many of them are very known, except smilodon and mammoths... (I haven't included the mammoth in this one, but it's about the same size as the Gomphotherium) Elasmotherium and Indricotherium are just amazing animals, it's strange that they aren't more popular...

Anyways, I needed this for The Shadowtainted. I'm considering being a little more loose on the historical correctness of things, and let there be Indricotheriums and Elotheriums wandering about in the lands of Contineo... I like to have things correct, but -gawd- adding these guys would really add to the setting, wouldn't it?

Don't focus on the drawings, I pretty much just shamelessly stole and traced those from some innocent google-users. I'm sorry! I wanted to focus on the sizes, 'kay?

My mac also killed it's own battery, which complicates my work slightly... It's annoying, but it won't stop me!

Okay, you're probably tired of reading now. Good night!

Dang, Dire wolves are smaller than I thought, I'm pretty sure some dogs grow to that height.

I'm pretty sure Panthera Leo Atrox is the biggest, but they were both huge And yes, I have heard of Andrewsarchus! I think they were somewhat closely related to entelodon, which is on the chart.

Smilodon used, was that S.Gracilis? It looks decidedly small, afterall S.Fatalis was lion-sized an S.Populator was in between Tiger-and-Polar Bear in size.

Panimated In reply to FearedAudacity [2013-02-02 23:55:57 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, I can't remember.. I think I was looking at fatalis. You might be right, it is a bit small... I based it on shoulder-height, and they are supposed to be about as tall as siberian tigers, which is.. 110-120 cm high? I'm not sure what sources I used, but yeah, if it's a fatalis, it's probably missing 10-20 cm, from the looks of it. Sorry about that! Well spotted

Hahah, don't worry, I know a bunch of artists who have their stories set in the ice-age

Yeah, the story is about lions... Cave lions, to be exact. In the ice age, surrounded by pleistocene animals and landscape.

Thank you

Domisea [2011-11-28 20:05:26 +0000 UTC]

But... isn't leo spelea too big? They had something like 120cm maybe 130 at shoulders, at this comparison to human it looks like it's about 150-160cm tall at shoulders (because lion shoulders is similiar to human shoulders in height) O.O ... BUT when you compare to squares, which every is 100cmx100cm, it looks 130-140cm O.o. And the human looks like 183... a 160cm tall girl is only few centimetres over a 183 man shoulders... WTH

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Panimated In reply to Domisea [2011-11-29 10:08:31 +0000 UTC]

No problem! That may be, I was following a length-comparison, where one source said it was 25% heavier than an african lion (ca 3m, so a leo spelaea would be approx. 3.20, which should be about right on this chart). I wouldn't say human and leo spelaea have equal shoulder-height, at least 10 cm is mane But yeah, I may have exaggerated a little... x) Maybe it's more correct to a leo Atrox?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Domisea In reply to Panimated [2011-11-29 16:54:49 +0000 UTC]

Hah.Maybe x). I think Smilodon looks to small in comparison to leo... but I don't know - is there Smilodon populator, or fatalis? XD

Panimated In reply to Domisea [2011-11-29 22:59:33 +0000 UTC]

luthien368 In reply to Panimated [2011-11-23 14:11:13 +0000 UTC]

Jea, go ahead! It really has a lot of boring parts (talking about plants and animals and landscapes), also a lot of repetitions (Oh, there's a wolf! Hey, look at that wolf! Is that a wolf! What's the wolf doing there?...), and the last book seems to be very disappointing (I think the author just wanted to finish it without ending the story by closing all the loose ends that came up during the story) - but nevertheless it is totally worth it. I still love reading it (one of my favorite english-practisces actually, I bought the (back then) whole set for my flight back home *sniff* Memories...

oh I see xD It sound pretty interesting though, not many books are written in that setting And I've hear a lot of good things about it :3 One day I'll read it, gotta read out "A Song of Ice and Fire" first though, and all the other unread books in my shelf... xD One day!
