Actually I've seen other artists use pastel chalk for detailing and shading, and then sealing it in with varnish. It's a really common technique as far as I can tell. Just make sure you use something with a very small wax content, as it COULD repel the varnish. So using a pastel pencil or stick might not be as helpful as a pressed pallet, or loose powder.
Acrylic paint is VERY easy to work with. I personally lay flats only, and let natural shading do the work, and keep my detailing to the face and extras, but it's SUPER easy to do cell shading, or what ever you want with it.
Basically everything that works for BJD's SHOULD work for GK's, but as GK's do require some priming, and skin colour the most important test is whether your different mediums work together.
So it might be good to take a piece that's hidden (like the inside of a skirt) and test your mediums together. That way it can easily be painted over, or sanded away.

Okay thankyou! I'll have to do some research on some pastels then. xD I was actually thinking of using a pallet and brush for shading, maybe, and then pencils for the eyes...? I'd have to check in to see what pencils would have little wax in them though, if there is really any out there.
I like acrylic paint, and I think I would have enough confidence for body, it's just when it comes to the face and all of those fine details I start to get a bit nervous. But actually considered getting some bootleg Sailor Moon stuff like the Figuarts Zero statue since I can get it for $20 shipped and I know the paint job won't be the best (I've seen red spray on Moon's hair and stuff on them), and work on repainting that first before getting the garage kits. Something to think about, I guess. |D
I really appreciate the response, by the way!

Pencils, as in drawing pencils, are usually made using clay and graphite +/- some ingredients (they aren't really listed lol), but wax shouldn't be an issue. Most pencil style mediums with wax in them will look shiny.
Pastel crayons and pencil crayons will likely have some wax in them, especially if they're cheap. High grade pastel pencils might not have any, or very little content. It's to help hold the pastel together, as well as act as a filler. I have very little experience with high grade pastel crayons/pencils in the last 5-8 years, so I have no idea what's out there to buy right now.
Repainting bootlegs is a GREAT start XD. I actually bought a bunch of bootleg Sailor Moon gashapon and turned them into custom gashapon (some of them are in my gallery). It's a great way to start, but not be afraid of screwing it up. That said, paint thinner WILL work on a garage kit, and the paints on them. So if you ever want to re-do it you don't need to buy a new figure. Though you SHOULD test your thinner before going all out, as I've heard of some thinners eating the plastic... and repair work is NOT fun.
and no problem! I like helping artists

Yeah ^^ But I would like to get my paint skills better first lol (already painted costs rivers of money o_O) My great concern is how to paint the eyes. Do you have any tip?

Pre-plan the eyes with pencil lead and use a very fine brush. You can also experiment with pen and marker instead of paint for the eyes, but you have to be careful to use a sealer that won't make it bleed. I typically use paint and a super thin acrylic paint brush.

Yes, I was thinking of using markers, because it's easier than paint on that kind of details. Thanks!

You just have to be careful. Markers tend to be transparent so you'll need to layer it. But it can get kind of messy.

Oh wow, you've used a wonderful soft colour scheme for your Chibi Moon. And I do love her eyelashes *g* Wasn't it difficult to apply those lashes to her eyes? The base also looks awesome. The little flowers remind me of some kind of marzipan cake decoration XD
As for the resin question, maybe you'll find further information on Wikipedia ^^

Oooh the eyelashes were HELL! I painted the flat lash after planning where I wanted the fake lash to glue. When it dried I applied glue to the lash and placed it where I wanted it to go and honestly... fast dry super glue was drying about as fast as a lake. I must have spent half an hour trying to glue each one on.
Thanks for the Wiki page! I've had another deviant explain it to me somewhat and I have seen that page before, but there's certainly a lot on it.

Aw, I know the problem with lame drying glue too well XD Despite that fact you did a great job on the eyelashes. I guess I'm too much a coward myself to try something like that.

Can you link me to something explaining what "resin" is to you? I work in a plastic plant and for me resin is the term used for plastic in it's pre-moulded form. For my plant specifically that is in a pellet form.
I started a search online about 2 years ago because I keep seeing figurines listed as "resin" and to me, as quality control in a plastic plant, that's basically the lazy way of saying "This is plastic, but we aren't really sure what kind." It's frustrating that people say that it's not plastic, yet the only other definition I can find that doesn't point me to plastic points me to tree sap lol.

LeonasWorkshop In reply to PaulineFrench [2011-05-19 18:13:59 +0000 UTC]
Well, if you have only searched for 2 years then you might have missed that pretty much the whole GK community calls this plastic "resin", I have been in this hobby for over 8 years and it's always been called like that, also we don't refer to this pieces as Figurines but Figures.
It's true that resin is a type of plastic, but it's like saying cheese is called milk, they might come from the same lactose family but they are not the same.
I don't mean to mock what you do as a profession, but these things have their own name in a distinctive group of people that work with these figures, call it part of a "language" that we speak.
Just like doctors, software engineers, constructors and other people that work with certain things, they all have their own "language".
