Description
The banana slug is the official mascot of my alma mater, the University of California at Santa Cruz.Hence, we refer (affectionately) to our UCSC students as 'slugs'.
This guy seemed to capture the spirit of it rather nicely - the headphones, the sunglasses, the whole 'Dude, Where's My Purpose' aesthetic...tis good to live in Santa Cruz, my friends.

Heh.... Actually... It WAS a Sea Lion... For quite some time. But a group of students got together and designed the "Banana Slug Reading Plato" design, with the "Fiat Slug" logo in the background, and used it themselves. Eventually popular demand picked it up and there was a push to change it. Why the slug? Because it's found ONLY in the redwood forests of california's pacific coast. And, hey, the school's covered in redwoods on the pacific coast. There ya go. (This info's actually on the tag of every "Banana Slug" shirt, sweater and cap sold in this damn town. So, heh, feel free to check up on my story.)

As for anyone asking 'why the slug?', my bad attempt at a reply.
UC Santa Cruz was formulated as 'something different'; instead of being organized around a central administration and living center, the campus was split into many (now, ten) colleges. These colleges have their own living arrangements, their own dining halls, their own administration, and their own graduations. Another way the school is different is that for a while grades were secondary to (or entirely replaced by) 'narrative evaluations,' paragraphs written by professors to state a student's strengths and weaknesses.
Then, there was the mascot. Instead of seeking the average, everyday style of mascot, an animal that kills or combats with others, UCSC embraced slimily the banana slug, a strange little bright yellow mollusk that lives in a symbiotic relationship with redwood trees local to the area. I think for a while there was a push for the Sea Lion as the UCSC mascot, but the peaceful slug somehow won. As you can imagine, UCSC isn't known for its sports teams.
Anyway, the picture's great, but the description multiplies all of it by five.
And unless I miss my guess, that guy's giving the hazy intensity of a History of Consciousness major.

But why would a school pick the banana slug as a mascot? Isnt that the asexual slug that devours its mates' penis after copulation?
