Description Best seat in the house.

This is the oldest set of my negatives I have found.  I have a few older contact sheets, but no negatives.

From www.arcadeandatticarr.com/our_… In the late 1950's, freight business began to slide and something had to be done in order to save the short line. The decision was made to try steam powered passenger excursions. #18 , a 1920 2-8-0 American locomotive, was purchased in 1962 from the Boyne City Railroad in Michigan along with two Delaware, Lackawanna and Western coaches. The inaugural run was on July 27 1962 for railroad officials and the press. Regular summertime excursions began in August of the same year.

On Labor Day, 1962, Dad took sister Marty and me for an excursion.  She would have been 11 and I, 12, and about to start seventh grade.   Dad's notes say Verichrome Pan; I have no recollection of the camera, a simple medium format box of some sort.

The negatives are only nominally square.  There is little if any spacing between them so they are slightly higher than wide.

Nice film, and great shot to hold both the dark interior, and the exterior light. Thank-you.

The twelve-year old young man did a decent job with whatever cheap camera he was using.

Indeed so.  Makes me wish I had kept up my photography in high school and college.

I'm not positive if this was the same trip as pictured here, but I did go on that train one time.  (I think Liz had some photos of all of us in it.)  This trip is one of those memories that is thoroughly stuck in my memory.  I remember getting to stand in the engine and watching them shovel coal into the heart of the beast, hearing the whistle, seeing the "robbers" (I thought it was pretty amusing and funny watching them), getting the engineer's cap, the mass of steam and steel and thunder and heat.

I loved that ride!

Dad's notes with the negatives say 1962, when Liz would have been three and you not quite 6.

Nice! I'm curious... this Pan film, does it have a wider exposure latitude? I'm surprised at the quality of these shots from a box camera.

I don't know.  It certainly performed well in whatever camera I was using.  The camera appears to have had a decent lens.

Thanks.  The negatives were in an envelope in a binder along with the contact sheet.
