They started hanging out sometime in the forties, I think. The earliest book I've seen where they're together was originally published in 1944, and it was a little compilation of short stories. In the newest series of books, they meet for the first time at some concert, so it's like a different continuity. But before that, the authors never specify how long they've known each other or how they met.
