Description 'Pippin pressed forward as they passed under the lamp beneath the gate-arch, and when he saw the pale face of Faramir he caught his breath. It was the face of one who has been assailed by a great fear or anguish, but has mastered it and now is quiet. Proud and grave he stood for a moment as he spoke to the guard, and Pippin gazing at him saw how closely he resembled his brother Boromir - whom Pippin had liked from the first, admiring the great man's lordly but kindly manner. Yet suddenly for Faramir his heart was strangely moved with a feeling that he had not known before. Here was one with an air of high nobility such as Aragorn at times revealed, less high perhaps, yet also less incalculable and remote: one of the Kings of Men born into a later time, but touched with the wisdom and sadness of the Elder Race. He knew now why Beregond spoke his name with love. He was a captain that men would follow, that he would follow, even under the shadow of the black wings.'

'Faramir!' he cried aloud with the others. 'Faramir!' And Faramir catching his strange voice among the clamour of the men of the City, turned and looked down at him and was amazed.'

Bfrother lof Boromir, heir to the Stweardship (Held by Denethor II). For a millennium, the Stewards held the throne (but not sitting in it OR wearing the crown. THAT was fior the king, Earnur, who rode forth into Minas Morgul to challenge the Witch-King -and never returned.).

The Stewards, while officially holding the vacant thrown for the king, actually hoped the King or any heir would NEVER return, as it meant he would resume rule, and the Stewards would lose their power.
and revert to their former rank....

Nicely done! Faramir looks very lordly indeed, but also very weary by his responsibilities. My only criticism is that the surcoat drapery doesn't reflect the armor being worn underneath.

Very happy you approve of Faramir's lordliness - I was indeed pleased with the result. Re the drapery of the clothing, I'd argue that there is no armour being worn beneath (certainly not chain mail at least). I've always held to the view that the Rangers of Ithilien did not wear any, since they were a largely guerrilla force, whose strength lay in stealth, secrecy and ambush. Furthermore, as per Tolkien's word -- 'All had swords at their sides, and were clad in green and brown of varied hues, as if the better to walk unseen in the glades of Ithilien' -- this would mean that they'd want to be unheard also. Metal armour would not help much in that regard.

"they'd want to be unheard "
They say there are ways to prevent one's chain-mail from clinking...

I don't know for sure, but I was told that if you put something kike a thin string through horisontal row of rings and lace its ends and repeat the procedure for all the rows, the mail won't clink. But it must be very time-consuming.

Time consuming indeed it sounds, but probably child's play for the heirs of the Numenoreans! Thanks for getting back to me

No sweat, you did what you thought was right, and it really didn't make any difference in the end result. I was quite taken with the picture.

No worries But you know what us Tolkien artists/enthusiasts are like, agonising over every little detail. Hence, I felt my choice warranted a mild response/defence

How do you determine where the folds go? Wing it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peet In reply to Cuthillius [2015-04-19 21:50:08 +0000 UTC]

Some of it is winged, and some of it is based on reference (such as Faramir's clothing in this piece). Generally speaking though, after years and years of practice, things make more sense to you. Still, I'd always recommend references it helps so much.
