Description 'The ridge upon which the companions stood went down steeply before their feet. Below it twenty fathoms or more, there was a wide and rugged shelf which ended suddenly in the brink of a sheer cliff: the East Wall of Rohan. So ended the Emyn muil, and the green plains of the Rohirrim stretched away before them to the edge of sight.'

JRR Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers: Book III ,  Chapter 2: The Riders of Rohan

Just wonderfully executed. I love the very traditionnal feel you put in your drawings, and I think it goes perfectly with the Lord of The Ring, or simply with the Middle Earth drawings you're doing. ♥

Thanks so much for the kind words! Yes, I think this style works particularly well for Tolkien. I think it's simply how I envisaged it as I read, it's Tolkien's words more than anything that I try to depict as closely as possible. This is the end result

OH WOW. That's very surprising. I don't usually see watercolors used with this much details!

Well, thanks again for the compliment It's certainly possible to achieve details with watercolours, normally by using less water as the layers build up

Oh, so did you have to wait for it to dry first before adding more paint?

peet In reply to heidi-rodis [2015-08-01 10:44:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes precisely . Actually, I'd say this is one of the slightly lesser detailed pieces in my gallery, since it's on a smaller canvas. Others - such as MormegilMidsummer's Eve  or Gwindor's Charge  amongst others - have more going on in them

Ah yes, I saw those too. What size of canvas/paper do you usually use? Err...do you use canvas or paper?

peet In reply to heidi-rodis [2015-08-16 11:17:47 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late response! I use paper, either heavy-duty cartridge paper or watercolour paper (usually and preferably the former). My works are in various sizes from A5, A4 to A3 (the vast majority being the latter). This one is in fact a miniature A5 piece .

peet In reply to heidi-rodis [2015-08-02 12:57:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sorry. I didn't realise you'd looked around . I use heavy duty cartridge paper for my more 'major', larger pieces, and approx. 25% of the time various watercolour papers (I still haven't found the perfect strictly watercolour paper yet, whereas the cartridge works well for me, I find). I'd say about 60% of my works are A3, 25% A4, and 15% A5. Roughly speaking This Rohan piece is in the last category (and was actually done on pre-bought watercolour board)!

I already commented this one on Elfwood, more than two years ago, but I need to do it now again. I'm just reading the chapter again, for I don't know how many times, and I had this image in mind again. Because you depicted it really just like I imagined it: the blue sky with the white clouds running above, the sudden breeze on the top of the hills... even the angle from which you portrayed the characters! Of course, there are some details that I imagined a different way, but those don't matter. You captured the feeling.

(And, BTW, if you were interested, here's my old, ooold sketch of Aragorn, the very first picture of him I ever made, probably eight or nine years ago. [link] So you can hopefully see what I meant in the above paragraph. I could do him better now, but I don't have to: you did it before me, and better than I ever could.)

This is somewhat different from your other paintings it more loose... if that's the word? I like how how the focus is on the landscape.

Wow. Just "wow"

Your control of watercolour is nothing short of amazing. Your palette is very strong, and evokes the 'high-epic' feeling (which Tolkien's work is). You captured the moment perfectly, in my opinion.

Beautiful!

nellmckellar [2005-04-04 10:14:28 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, truly lovely to see your rendition of the plains of Rohan!
I really really like the traditional-watercolour feel to it. It's a bit more "loose" than some of your other work. There is a really nice flow to it, colour wise. The texture and colours of the land in the foreground is delicious! All your works have such an organic feel. You have a good colour sense, it really does suit Tolkien's work.
There's a great feeling of "grandness." The clouds are massive and looming, and I think it really lends to the sparse, sweeping vistas of Rohan. It almost feels like it's about to rain, or a storm's about to hit...
I love this.

peet In reply to nellmckellar [2005-04-22 14:00:59 +0000 UTC]

Apologies for the late reply on this one.

Thank you very much indeed. I wanted to make this a slightly epic piece, sort of symbolic that we're now at a different point in the book. The Fellowship's broken, the focus of the story now switches, and I wanted to depict that in a refreshing way. The huge brooding clouds are meant to show the storm that is coming ever closer, and I think that the Three Hunter's arrival in Rohan marks that turning point. Also, Tolkien describes the plains of rohan as a green-grey sea crashing in waves to the foot of the Emyn Muil, so I wanted to kind of make it mirror cliffs by the sea, with the grass literally swirling up in waves towards the rock (whilst still retaining a sense of realism of course). I don't know whether that's discernable or not, but I wanted to try that anyway. Again, thanks so much. Your comments are always brilliant!
