Description 'But Thingol perceived their hearts, and saw well that desiring the Silmaril they sought but a pretext and fair cloak for their true intent; and in his wrath and pride he gave no heed to his peril, but spoke to them in scorn, saying: 'How do ye of uncouth race dare to demand aught of me, Elu Thingol, Lord of Beleriand, whose life began by the waters of Cuiviénen years uncounted ere the fathers of the stunted people awoke?' And standing tall and proud among them he bade them with shameful words be gone unrequited out of Doriath.
Then the lust of the Dwarves was kindled to rage by the words of the King; and they rose up about him, and laid hands on him, and slew him as he stood.'

Heartbreakingly accurate to the way I pictured it!! It was a sad end for Elwe Singollo Thingol and the ruining of Doriath. Alas! For the oath of Feanor and the Curse of Mandos.

Apologies for the late response, and many thanks for the kind comment! I'm really glad you approve of this depiction of a pretty momentous - and indeed sad - scene in the history of Arda!

Thank you! And yes a shame indeed, though it's partly down to the terrible Oath, I think It's that intriguing interplay between free will and determinism that plays out continuously throughout the whole of Tolkien's world, I think (and I guess our own).

Ikr? This theme of facing and inevitable end is a common throughout the book.

This is exactly how I imagined king Thingol... So sad he ended like that, whenI first read that part my heart broke

Nice illustration, I think I haven't seen this particular moment depicted before. It must have been difficult to capture the light of the Silmaril, but it turned out quite well. Again, nice architectural details.
By the way, great to hear that your art is going to appear in The Hobbit EE material.

Thanks a lot! There're two versions of this that I'd seen before and liked: the first admittedly not being the explicit scene as such, Nauglamir ; and also Thingol's doom

Thats so amazing your work could be in the extended Hobbit edition! I REALLY have to see this!
I still haven't seen any of the extended editions and I really want to when I have money to buy them
I love how powerful Thingol's face is in this painting, you really have a talent of showing an ancient world which I truly admire in your work

My Beren & Luthien made it onto the DoS EE last year actually, and hopefully a few more will make the final cut, but there're certainly no guarantees! Although when it comes to this piece, I have to say personally that I was very ill-pleased with Thingol's face (and headpiece), more than anything else. In hindsight, I chose the wrong watercolour paper for this one - its very harsh and thick (I have no idea about specifications, I found it in an old dusty art shop years ago, and it has none of that information), and so is far more suitable for impulsive wet-in-wet work - for example, it's the same paper used for Elwing Bearing the Silmaril , which just ate up the water and it turned out perfectly. My thinking here was that I'd be using a lot of water and paint for low-lights and contrasts, but when I came to the final details it just didn't work out. The Elven-king's face suffered as a result. Oh well, it was too late to turn back And now I'll stop rambling at you!!

Oh this is really neat!!! I havent seen many artworks of this scene other than one other than this one and im glad you made it!! It really is amazing and you captured the scene well!  The lighting is beautiful and i like how you actually have them fighting over the necklace! I feel bad for Thingol though  But this is gorgeous work!

There are a couple of versions of this scene out there that I like, but they're quite differently stylistically to mine I always pictured this as a very confused and manic moment, so I hope I captured that here. Again, much appreciated for the comment
