Description
Ruins at the Stony Dell Resort
Stony Dell Resort, on old Hwy 66, Arlington, MO
Now tucked back off I-44, are the remains of this once bustling Route 66 stop. The famous Route 66, was a 2,400 mile highway stretching from Lake Michigan in Chicago, Illinois all the way to Los Angeles, CA. Construction was begun in 1926 as part of the US's first federal highway system. Numerous roadside attractions popped up along the route, offering recreation and a break for travelers. As the road evolved, various realignments occurred, leading to the eventual extinction of many of these business. The Stony Dell Resort is one such casualty. Stony Dell was built by George Prewett in 1932 and featured a 100 foot long, spring fed stone swimming pool, a store, restaurant, and guest cabins. The Resort was visited by travelers, soldiers from nearby Fort Leonard Wood, and celebrities such as Mae West. The town of Arlington, MO was bypassed by a wider alignment of the route in 1946, leading to the immediate decline of Stony Dell. The resort remained in operation into the 1960s, but all resort structures south of the old 66 route, including the swimming complex, were torn down in 1967 to accommodate construction of I-44. Today the remaining structures to the north of the road lie in ruin.
