Fanfic: The Shadow of His Wings

I've drawn this not long after DH, when the hole that HP has left was too big and I discovered that my favourite fic has been updated in the LJ of the author last April. I used it as an excuse to plunge back into the HP universe and tried to draw my beloved character at the age of 25 years… I intended to draws all character from TSoHW, but lost interest before I had them all together. It lies around on my desktop and wastes space, therefore I upload it now. Still, I do miss Snape, Lupin, Neville and Hermione and I'd liked to draw Bill and Narcissa. I love that I've managed to draw characters I've never drawn before, tough.

The Shadow of His Wings plays ten years after OotP. Voldemort vanished again, having realized that he hadn't enough strength to take over the wizarding world. Life went on, the people were only too eager to forget the unpleasant events. But for Harry and other characters the story had no end, it was "a bit like having the last stair not be where you thought it would be". In a way, 10 years later, they seem to have failed in life… The fic starts when the debilitating wait for the storm comes to an end: Percy (who has never reconciled with his family) kills his own sister, frees Lucius Malfoy out of Azkaban and both vanishes. His family is left behind, trying to comprehend the incomprehensible und Harry starts to realize, that Hogwarts may soon face a three-way war…

This fic is a great rec for everyone who loves Slytherin politics and a manipulative Lucius. Besides Mirabella, I only know Chthonya who writes him like that. (If you are just as obsessed with Invictus as I am, you should give it a try. I enjoyed nothing more than the dialogues between Lucius and Percy in which Lucius slowly corrupts Percy's gryffindor-innocence.)

TSoHW reads like gen, but it is not. In fact it is H/D slash – the only ship you are allowed to know ahead. Maybe it reads like gen, because the question is never who gets the girl (or the boy) and the fic deals with the enormous complex loyalties and relationships of the various characters – quite everyone seems involved into a love triangle of some kind – and is only to often not aware of it. Mirabella is terrible at writing these relationships and describes what is going on just beyond the consciousness of the characters – to distract right away so that the reader doesn't really know what is going on for a long time and eventually realizes the truth and more important – that it was always here, right from the beginning. Fics like that remind you what you have lost in a fandom that is defined by ships and tells you all the ships ahead...
