thank you! I'd say definitely look at references and get a feel for what you'd like to do with the environment before you start the map. planning will go a lot smoother once you know what you do and don't need! otherwise you can end up with a lot of unnecessary clutter (or not enough!). making the room a unique shape instead of a simple square/rectangle can make it stand out as well. experimenting with shapes, colors and themes will really help you figure out what kind of style you want to go with for it (in terms of line boldness, perspective, palettes etc!)
just keep in mind where players will be walking around (if it's a game) or where the character, if any, will be placed in general and make sure that they stand out against the scene! hope that helps ;;
