Description
Barely an hour passed before the sun finally melted beneath the waves as night approached without mercy, the last fading glimmers of daylight vanished into the depths of the ocean as the world around us both fell into total darkness. Lenola stayed beside the oar of our boat, bravely guiding us into the heart of the calm seas under the veil of darkness, only the slowly rising moon offered any meagre refuge from the blackness and though she tried to remain calm and confident, Lenola wasn’t enjoying the pitch black. Sensing her fear I scurried up and ignited the lamp just above her head, at least offering her some respite from the ceaseless darkness, her eyes soon told a story of how much calmer just a mere candle made her feel. As Lenola calmed down I looked out in every direction to see exactly the same, pitch black all around us only offset by faint glimmers of light catching the softly ebbing waves.
I crept up Lenola’s arm and stood beside her head and whispered “We’ll be okay Lenola” gently cupping her ear to steady her nerves, Lenola didn’t utter a word in reply but merely nodded her head as I tried coaxing her to lay down hoping that would settle her fears. However as my entire body began trembling I noticed just how afraid she truly was as I looked down her arm and noticed just how much she was shaking with fear, her faintest movements were so rigid and her mouth almost fixed open as she looked for dangers in the darkness. I had to do something until the moon rose and gave us a little light. I strolled out onto her arm and I started to talk to her, gently reassuring Lenola until she slowly but nervously let her grip of the oar loosen just slightly and yet she still remained rigid, shaking with eyes so wide that they almost gave off more light than the moon.
“Come on Rowena think!” I started scolding myself about how to calm Lenola down enough to at least get her to sit down beside me, when I looked up at the faint stars high above me and inspiration struck me from deep within. I looked up and called, “Lenola, I need your help!” to her and sure enough she warily broke her gaze from the black abyss and looked down uttering “What’s wrong?” with the most concerned smile I had seen across her lips as I tapped a spot beside me and asked again “Come help me!” I hunched down and curled myself up waiting for her to respond as I knew she would. As Lenola knelt down beside me and softly touched my back and whispered “What’s wrong Rowena” I formed a tiny blue orb of light in my hand made from a dream of today's adventure and let it loose to roll towards her. Lenola’s eyes glowed as the soft blue light teased her face and she gently reached down and picked up the little orb, stared with wonder upon its soft blue glow as her own giggles echoed from within it’s heart and Lenola finally ceased shaking.
Silently I watched her as she studied the glowing dream, listening to her own giggles and watching with astonished eyes as she mumbled “What is this Rowena?” I stepped closer, reached for her and touched her knees “It’s a dream about you” Lenola looked down at me uttering “About me?” as she pointed at herself. I nodded back slowly with a smile growing on my face “Yes this dream is about you Lenola” I paused and looked into the orb as a giggle echoed again from within the blue glow as I proudly whispered “I have hundreds of dreams about my best friend Lenola” Lenola looked down at me and gently cupped me in her hand as I sighed “Why don’t you lay down and I can show you some more of them?” I moved to the side, sat down and gently patted the spot beside me as Lenola eased herself down and let out a little yawn before slowly easing herself back to rest looking up at both the lantern above us and the stars far beyond.
While Lenola came to rest I started to form another little orb, filled with her laughter and sweet voice, as I let it drop from my hands and it rolled along the deck of the boat with a soft blue glow filling the bow of our boat with both light and Lenola’s infectious laughter. Lenola watched in awe listening to her own giggles and scooping me up to lay on her chest as I started forming more orbs of light from all the dear memories we had shared so far. I was filled with such deep pride as each one reminded me just how deeply our bond had grown and of all the little steps in our adventure together so far and as we became surrounded in little glowing dreams Lenola’s yawns grew deeper and longer. Soon enough the dreams began spilling out into the water and even the ocean now glowed with a soft blue light echoing from below offset by a gentle yellow glow from the lamp just above us.
Pausing briefly I watched as Lenola’s eyes started closing and she started easing gently down and resting with her hands holding me in place, her lips moving as she tried to fight to stay awake as I laid down and whispered “Let’s dream together Lenola” pausing briefly to set more dreams into the waters around us as I contently sighed “We will share so many more of these dreams soon” Lenola didn’t utter a single word as the moon finally rose just in time for Lenola to catch a fleeting glimpse before her eyes closed and she softly drifted away into a sea of dreams. Proudly I gazed upon her and crept forwards, kissing her on the cheek “Good night Lenola” and casting just one last dream to rest just on her brow as I whispered “I love you” to her before easing back into the comfort of her hands to be warmed by her heart through the long night.
