He is.  He used to be an alcoholic and actually can't remember making several of his films because he was drunk, but able to hide it extremely well.  For example, he has said that he cannot recall shooting even one scene in The Scarlet Letter.  He's still the man.

Oh yeah, totally serious.  I read it in an interview with him years ago.  In a lot of his earlier films, you can kind of see it in his eyes; they are slightly glazed over.  But he usually played roles where the characters were not exactly clean cut, so it didn't really matter.  He never fell about the film sets in drunken stupors.  Like I say, he was boozing but was still an amazingly good actor anyway.
