Quite the favourite subject of mine, that of horses. Majestice beasts in their integrity and probably one of the hardest things to draw (personally) and are incredibly difficult to animate.
First I must say I love the title, people don't realise the importance of naming your work. It's very charming! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/m/m… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Meow :3"/>
The first thing I notice is the thickness of the horses jaw. Even shire horses have quite a jowly jaw. Whereas this seems a bit too round and smooth. A horse's jawline is like a brick, flat and straight, whereas this curves quite simply. A slight jut may have helped to give the horse a more defined feel. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/m/m… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Meow :3"/>
Another aspect I believe is that the horse feels very 2 dimensional, I don't mean that in the fact is should be 3d, but there is very litte light and shadow, it's mostly a blend of greys. Greys are infact quite easy to work with for shading. A smudge of white along the bridge of his nose and on the tip of the nose itself and some slight ambience around te neck and jawline could make the work feel more three dimensional. Like the hair for example, the wiry feel, especially on the top of the head feels very realistic and 'feelable'. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/m/m… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Meow :3"/>
But overall, especially with the background, which I cannot find any form of flaw with, the work is impressive e.deviantart.net/emoticons/m/m… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Meow :3"/> I love the form and figure of the horses head, the creases and grroves are in all the correct places.
Originality is a tough one, the solemn horse on the mountainside/field is used quite alot. But I do love how the horse contrasts against the pale background. But it always helps to just drag that contrast tool up by even 5 to give a little bit more glow e.deviantart.net/emoticons/m/m… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Meow :3"/>
The technique is wonderful, very realistic with beautiful colours. There is nothing lacking in technique, it's very beautiful e.deviantart.net/emoticons/m/m… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Meow :3"/>
Visually this is quite the piece, I do love the contrast and this would make a wonderful custom wallpaper e.deviantart.net/emoticons/m/m… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Meow :3"/> The leading lines created by the mountains are perfect. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/m/m… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Meow :3"/>
Overall this is a lovely work of art and shows alot of promise in the artis'ts abilities as a horse artist.
And yes, I listened to Iron by Woodkid the whole I was critiquing e.deviantart.net/emoticons/m/m… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Meow :3"/>
