Je suis très contente que tu aies reçu la DD !

Je trouve cette photo magnifique, bien qu'elle reprΓ©sente une triste rΓ©alitΓ©.

Yeah. The place was so strange. Fire, some exploding bottles of gas... and those animals right here.

If you do not mind the curiosity, where on Earth did you shoot this? The Arctic fox is such a poster animal of threatened wilds that seeing one scavenging in an open landfill is an almost unbelievably horrifying image.

Thanks for your comment
Arctic foxes are like any kind of foxes, they look for food even in wastelands. I did this picture on Bering Island, the biggest island of the Commander archipelago. And yes it was quite sad to observe such scene, but considering the place, and how difficult it is to live, I understand why you have this kind of scene.

Hello
Thanks for your comment. What do you mean by how I did this picture ?

In fact I visited that place 10 years ago, it is on Bering Island, in the middle of the Pacific ocean. I wanted to visit it again and found those foxes there.

I meant, did you stand in the middle of the fire and everything? Congrats on the DD by the way. Well deserved!

Thanks a lot !

And yes I did stand in the middle of this mess. That was so strange, with so many broken glass everywhere, and some empty bottle of gas exploding randomly in the fire...

It was the strangest shooting I did in my entire life. By far !

What a sad and bleak state of affairs this photo shows, in that this animal has been reduced to scoring a garbage dump for food.

The fact that they openly burn the garbage only accentuates the point. Thanks for bring this photo to light it shows the world how pathetic

humans can really be.

On a side note, I've noticed that all but one of the comments you've gotten on this have been about the fact your title doesn't match the animal,

another sad point that people only care about the trivial matters and not the true point of the intention.

The human mind has become nothing more then a burning garbage dump as well.

Hello and thanks for your comment. I understand all your point, but I try to be positive about that even if it looks really sad.

The life on this island is REALLY hard, and people don't have the choice to drop all those trash next to the village. They did add a net around the area to protect the surrounding but the weather conditions are so bad that it stayed in position for a few years. Burning the trash is not good for the atmosphere, but it helps the trash to decompose faster. Even if I do not make such thing here, I did have to burn my trash on the Island. It broke my heart, but it helped us to heat the house (we had only 0Β°C on June and a very strong wind).

The life for the foxes is not better. And this area is a luck for them. I found more foxes here than all around the island. Of course that in our own opinion it is a shame, but for them it is a way to raise their pups

About the fact that some didn't understand the meaning of the tittle, it happens When I see during my exhibitions that some people are not even able to read 2 lines of explanations

Well for me the point is that you took the time to shoot this image

and post it, bringing attention to this issue.

That is the main point of this as far as I'm concerned,

Awareness and maybe with that comes positive change.

phalalcrocorax In reply to GraphFrite [2019-07-31 21:57:50 +0000 UTC]

Really true. And this is one of my main concern as a nature photographer : showing every aspects of what I observe. Happy that some feel concerned the same way I do

If we do not think about what we are seeing and call them by their names, we cannot hope to identify the problems of our own creation.
