The Star, painted for @color.tarot.project , a tarot deck themed around the spectrum of colors! It's coming to Kickstarter this Spring, and is chock-full of amazing artist contributors! I'm honored to have been asked to participate and cannot wait to see the whole project come to fruition! Find out more at colortarotproject.com .

Not having a lot of experience with tarot, I focused on trying to capture the themes of the card without being too attached to the Rider-Waite imagery. The chief (attempted) allusion to it is in the arched pier of rock extending from the shore into the water, which I analogize to the image of the woman with one foot in the water and one on land. As this card follows the Tower, I also thought about creating a foil to the despair and destruction of the former card by depicting a tower of hope and promise, topped by the aspirational image of a star.
