I love Cheerilee but I get the feeling she doesn't have a lot of friends and probably spends a lot of time by herself. She doesn't have a special somepony (that look she had when questioned about it tells me that there is a story as to why and that she is well aware of her 'single' status) - at least nothing for certain. Also, when Pinkie wished her a happy birthday in "A Friend in Deed" she was all by herself - unless she was off to a party, but then why the hell was Pinkie headed the other way? Also, we've never really seen her with other ponies... She puts on a cheery exposition but I think she's hurting inside. Just my opinion...This started out as just a sketch that I just kept adding to. I was going to touch it up but I felt as though the unfinished appearance helped the mood. Poor Cheerilee.

Thy opinion makes so much perfect sense...
Now I love Cheerilee even more. She was my favorite pony... But now most appreciated cartoon character. At least a little appreciation should go to the best teacher!

If I had the time and inclination, I would write a "Cheerilee gets love" story. That mare needs some joy in her life, and fast. And it needs to be more than just a Guinness and a good shag.

My theory is that she had love but through some tragic event she lost it. Now she finds it hard to love again. Either way, I agree: she needs more joy and love, both in the show and from the fans.

Some fans have suggested that she has a failed marriage in her past; probably a case of getting married far too young, things going totally pear-shaped, and a very messy divorce at the end. All inside of three years or so. That would certainly mess her up and fill her with self-doubt.
Becoming a young widow would also mess her up, but in other ways. Instead of self-doubt, she might have a genuine fear of feeling love again.
Mind you, I can't see the writers giving any pony such a dark back story, but it's fun to talk about.

Well, if there was a pony to give a dark back story it would be Cheerilee. It might work well, actually. Maybe a lesson about a loss of relationship would be beneficial to some ponies, not to mention some viewers. It is becoming a very common thing these days, especially divorce.
The more I think about it the more I like the idea. Cheerilee would be the perfect pony for something like that. She is able to continue on with life with a cheerful outlook even after a devastating relationship loss.
But you may be right, it would be a bit too dark.

I was thinking of giving Cheerilee a backstory that take place before she got her cutie mark and this art and Shining Armor relationship with Twilight really helps (I won't be giving her a brother, but I will give her a friend)

That'd be pretty cool. I'm thinking of doing something similar but with the topic being why she doesn't have a special somepony. (That look on her face when she was asked about it tells me there's a good story in there.)
